Hi there,

It looks like everyone has been trying to find a way to have MS Office files on SE. Tired of waiting, I came up with a solution (if you just want the solution and don't want to know the "hows, whats and whys, just download and run the attachment, see below).

Sony Ericsson phones can open HTML files. And I found out they can open MHTML files, which are files with all images, html, javascript and everything else embedded. Internet Explorer can generate this kind of file. The trick here is that IE creates the file with the extension mht. But SE will only open if you rename it to .mhtml

But before you can create a mhtml file, you need to convert your Office docs to html. Theoretically, you could do it manually, although I found lots of bugs and had to parse the Office generated html to fix things. And that won't definitely work for PowerPoint (in this case I had to generate pngs and create a html template without frames from scratch).

Anyway, it is time consuming having to open the Office app, such as Word, load the file, chose options, save html to a temporary location, open the page in IE, save it to mht, rename it to mhtml and delete temp files.

So, here it is. A small program that will ask for an office file and create a file with the same name, plus the extension .mhtml in the same folder. Just transfer it to your phone and open it. One single file will have dozens of PowerPoint slides, as many Word document pages or Excel sheets as you want.

First version, needs testing.

Current limitations: it only saves the first worksheet in a workbook.
Future development: batch conversion, shell integration (right-click), MyPhoneExplorer integration, PowerPoint slide size customizable, custom destination directory, image resize and choosable format, etc, etc.

I'd love to hear your comments, especially if they are positive!

Cheers,
Mr. Milk
