They selected 900, 1800, and 2100 MHz as GSM's bands. Yet those 3 frequencies were already allocated in the United States for other uses.
You would think, for GSM to become a true "Global Standard," the GSM-A would do their homework and find 3 bands not in use anywhere in the world. I find it suspicious that they found three bands that were available everywhere
except North America. And they can't plead ignorance, as the US FCC's frequency allocation information is publicly accessible.
I smell a rat.
We've been screwed with our 850 and 1900 MHz for voice. And now we're even more screwed with our 850/1900 or 1750/2050 3G frequencies. All of which has kept us behind the curve - on purpose.
Thank you, World

imo the usa choose those frequences, nobody forced them to do it... or they just didnt developed. we got in europe 450 mhz 10 years ago but we moved on...

We "chose" the frequencies closest to those already chosen by the GSM Association.
900 MHz was already in use for cordless telephones and similar devices. So we "chose" 850.
1800 and 2100 were already in use by the Federal Government. So we "chose" 1750, 1900, and 2050.
You can't just re-allocate spectrum that had been in use for decades by other, non-mobile users.
Still crying foul.

I think the USA (government) screwed themselves by hogging all the good bands for intelligence purposes. They should have left those clear for communications and found crappier bands to use for other purposes. By doing that, they also screwed their allies (including Colombia), which innocently followed suit. The GSM association did what was best for most of the world.

but i am afraid, there is not much to do against it atm...
seems for your government the citizens their own citizens arent that "important" as their own interest...
actually i didnt know, thats thats the reason for the 850 mhz etc
very strange

They could just as easily done what as right for
all of the world.
I'll remind you again, the three bands in question were already in use here before GSM materialized.

maybe the government and other services knew, that those fequences are the best for communicate and focused on own interest, even they knw, that the world would offer those for the public, but they didnt cared about it...
i dont think u should blame the "gsm" co, more the egoistic behaviour of your policy...

Yes, of course, it's all big bad America's fault
There is almost infinite spectrum. Picking 3 bands out of infinite spectrum is hardly "hogging all the good ones."
Besides, our 850, 1750, 1900, and 2050 bands are all available here. Why didn't the GSM-A pick those? They're similar to the others, so they should have similar power (transmission and usage) characteristics.

But surely these bands have some sort of advantage over other bands, like a good power usage, quality and capacity relation. That's why the US government picked them in the first place. They should have seen this coming or at least taken action right when they were chosen for cell phones. But instead they were greedy and hogged them.
