My w880 appears to heat up at the bottom of the phone (below the battery). Has anyone experienced this? Surely it isn't normal. I've had the phone for little over a week however it's only been in use a couple of hours as I've been waiting for my number to be ported.

I sent to a servicecenter and they change my battery and made some upgrade and now it works perfectly.
So i recommend you to go back to the store where you bought it and they will fix it for you

Not sure about a service centre. I'll give Orange a ring tomorrow morning I'm sure they'll sort it out. By rights I can swap my phone for another seen as it's less than 14 days since I took out the contract, I'm sure they'll sort it out.
