another interesting article on The Register about the Qualcomm "monopoly" in the US. Or why the Asian and European GSM path will rule the world.
Qualcomm was a blessed company with great technology ideas. It pioneered an interesting spread spectrum radio technique and hold 40 percent of the CDMA patents and earns money from this. Every network operator using the CDMA patents pay royalties to Qualcomm. People hat monopolies not matter how good the technology is. China has
decided not to go for either CDMA or GSM, but will use TD-SCDMA, a GSM overlay which it developed in conjunction with Siemens. Four years ago Qualcomm executives boasted that CDMA would have the largest share of the 2G phone business. When the world went GSM, they then promised that the world would run Qualcomm's cdma2000 3G standard. But Europe and Asia have already plumped for WCDMA in volume, which gives Qualcomm a much smaller royalty.

FCC accepted to make the bandwidth needed for WCDMA available and expects to license five service providers to use these frequencies. A good day for AT&T, Cingular, and T-Mobile as they now officially can roll out their 3G networks.
Yes, Sprint and Verizon claim they have 3G networks rolled out already but it is not true 3G. WCDMA will have greatly improved and faster connection and will allow for streaming video right in your handset.
Hopefully FCCs actions today will give more hope to WCDMA in the US.
