> BGA problem???????

My phone is acting up, the speaker and microphone aren't working - the phone hasn't been dropped. Either it is a software bug or the BGA chip might have been misplaced with its contacts.
Has anyone have a similar problem? What is the solution?

During a call, when adjusting the volume with the side button, is it as usual or do you just see "0/0"?

The volume can be adjusted, but still the speaker is dead. However the speaker reacts when Igo onto the secret menu and select the speaker test.
what do u recon? a software problem or harware? The phone has never been abused, and I used to have a Nokia 8850 which gave me no problems this past 2 years.
The thing is either I spend $$$ and get the phone fixed under warranty in UK (there are no service points in malta), or I risk losing the warranty and upgrade the software - which in that case i would be f**ked if its a hardware problem.

I forgot to mention above, that i live in Malta so it would be no cheap to insure the phone and send it by post. However I know someone in malta (not ericsson related) that would upgrade the software for me for free.

hmmm.... sounds as it can be a faulty systemconnector... a faulty systemconnector can cause the phone to believe there is a handsfree connected and therefore turn off the internal speaker and microphone
have you tested using it with a handsfree?

I haven't got a handsfree. But i think you are right as the phone keeps on activating the "Port-h-free" profile by itself.
Would this problem fix itself if I upgrade the software?

no... it doesn't help with a software upgrade, the systemconnector either needs to be resoldered or replaced.

Thanks, you have been helpful.
Well I think I would take the phone tomorrow for repair at an unauthorized shop, rather than ship it to the UK. This shop will be charging me 75 euros, but I would lose the warranty, however I would get the phone repaired quickly.
Do you think 75 euros is expensive for a repair?
Thanks again.

not much more than it would have cost here in Sweden if it would have been done outside warranty... so no, I don't think it's expensive...
