> T-Mobile and the Sony Ericsson T300

i am planning on buying a sony ericsson t300 from t-mobile. i went on the sony ericsson web site and they say with the t300 u can download games. so i am planning on buying the t300 but do u have to buy the t-zones add on or the t-mobile internet add on in order to download games.

Yes, T-zones is needed to download games but at $2.99 a month it is not bad at all. Or the $29.99 plan has it included already.

The jury is still out on my end wether T-zones is good or not (worth the $3 or not).
So far I have used it to download ringtones, themes, backgrounds and screensavers to my phone. But now that I have bought an IrDA adapter (great investment, can be used with a TON of stuff) I think I'll be changing tunes and pics via that. Not to mention that images and tones downloaded via WAP (T-zones) cannot be forwarded to anyone, they are locked to the particular phone, while everything sent from IrDA can be shared with anyone making it more flexible.
So now that I have gotten another (better) solution to my ringtone and background needs there are the following things that are still making T-zones worthwhile.
1) Camera Messaging and MMS. I can send pictures to other phones and MMS messages with tones and fancy animations. Kind of cool, but other than sending my personal pictures taken with the camera I don't think I'll be creating animations and sending them to phones. Also right now it is very limited who I can send the messages to and MMS is not working to send it overseas (Europe). Also I am still waiting for my mail in rebate camera so until I get that I can't send my own pictures which kind of bums me out.
2)E-mail. Sending messages to e-mail addresses including pictures is possible from the MMS message menu currently. Receiving e-mails is only possible through the WAP E-mail interface provided by T-mobile. and while I command their effort to make it user friendly and compatible with ANY WAP enabled phones, I think it is a pain in the rear to check my e-mail via the WAP interface and I doubt I'd use it much. However the T300 is capable of native POP3 and SMTP support via the e-mail menu. And if you check closely T-mobile already included an e-mail account setup there which is half assed and not even working. Also to get my e-mail throguh the POP3 and send e-mail through the SMTP, T-zones does not seem to be good enough, I think it requres an upgrade to T-internet which is $10 for 2MB, and if you ask me that is way too expensive, and I will not pay that much. I have managed to download e-mails from my POP box via GSM data and using my ISP account, however it eats up minutes, every time you want to check your e-mail it wastes a minute, and it is only 9.6Kbit/sec so it is slow.
So until I can use the phones POP3 and SMTP capabilities through GPRS and T-zones it has no value to me.
3)Information (news,movie times etc.) I sit in front of a computer all day, then I go home and I have broadband on my PC. So I get my daily news on-line aleady. I just don't spend too much time away from a PC to justify the need for immediate headlines. The only thing I can find it useful for is you're having dinner and you want to figure out what's playing at the movies and you can do that via T-zones now. It is convenient if you just want to go to the movies without actually checking the showtimes at home. Other than that, I don't see the benefit.
So in a nutshell, I think WAP and GPRS are still in their infancy and while T-mobile has done an EXCEPTIONAL work getting it to customers in the easiest most chewable format it still needs some improvements before it will have true use and benefit for most people. And I'll keep it for $2.99 it is pretty good to have just in case you're stranded in a long line at the DMV and you're already bored with the games.........

You can use POP and SMTP via T-Mobile GPRS if you...
1) use the IP numbers of your POP and SMTP servers; and
2) SMTP if your e-mail service provider allows remote SMTP with authentication.
There is also an undocumented (last time I checked) "Smartphone" plan for $5/month that provides 1MB of internet data (i.e. e-mail, www, netnews, etc.) and 1MB of WAP data per month, plus 300 or 500 SMS messages (I forget, way more I need in any case). I have the Smartphone plan and do POP/SMTP mail (w' IP #s) on my Visor Edge (w' bluetooth springboard) connected to my T39m.
I have to read through this board to see if there is reliable DNS yet, wasn't when I set up my PDA and phone last year.

Thanks for your reply, however I have tried to set up my data account with numerous settings.
I have tried to add the DNS server 216.155.175.040 to my setup as another user on T-mobile has seemed to be able to solve his problem by doung that, but it did not fix my issue.
I also tried to add the IP address of my mail server instead of the domain name with the same results. It does not work. It keeps saying "Finding server" and nothing happens. It can't find the server and it will not sync up. However using a regular GSM data account with an ISP works.
It seems like that you and the other guy in this thread
http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=14565&forum=14#post184088 have found a solution to hte problem, however for me it does not seem to solve the problem I still can't connect to my e-mail server.
Note that I have a T300 and it has came with preinstalled data settings already. It has one called T-Zones, another one called T-mobile Internet (it does not work) and a T-mobil internet backup (seems to be GSM connection but does not work either). Note that these 3 settings are non editable non deleteable from the phone. I have created two others, one GSM and one GPRS, but the GPRS does not work, does not matter what I try.
I have also opened a case on t-mobile's on-line support regarding the matter, we'll see how soon they will answer and what their answer going to be.......
