Sony Ericsson outperformed Motorola in handset sales in Taiwan in April, replacing Motorola as the second largest vendor in Taiwan with a 19% share, according to estimates by the retail channels in Taiwan. Sony Ericsson ranked as the third largest vendor with a 17.5% market share in Taiwan in March.

While maintaining its title as the largest handset vendor in Taiwan, Nokia managed to push its share to 31.3% in April, up from 29.9% in March, the sources noted.

Motorola fell to third place, with its market share declining to 18.7% in April, down from 21.6% in March. However, Motorola is expected to see its market share rebound in May thanks to the launch of a number of 3.5G handsets as well as a series of entry-level and mid-range models, the sources indicated.

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics were ranked as the fourth and fifth largest vendors, holding a 12.4% and 2.7% market share, respectively, in April. The two companies are expected to maintain their rankings in May, the sources noted.

Overall, volume sales of handsets in Taiwan totaled about 550,000 units in April, down 14.4% from the previous month, according to a report in the May 21 issue of the Chinese-language Commercial Times newspaper.

How long have they been making GSM phones, though? Remember, S. Korea uses CDMA.
