best thing to do is contact 3 and obtain the unlocking code from them directly.

Don`t bother wasting time on contacting 3. I`ve tried that couple of months ago when I got my Z610.... I`ve spend about half an hour on the phone and in the end I was told that they "Under no circumstances WILL NOT give out unlocking codes" before the end of 12 months contract, and THEN I`d have to pay 100 pounds.....what a joke !
Find local high street mobile phone shop and get it done for 10-20 pounds

Buy a pay as u go sim and then ask them for a unlock code....
they will charge you no more than 20gbp....
In the United Kingdom, government regulator OFCOM dictates that networks must release the unlocking information to customers for non-contract handsets (e.g. Pay as you go) on request. Consumers who purchase handsets under “Pay as you go” or a similar scheme are purchasing the handset outright at the point of sale, this has in effect made phone unlocking in the UK a consumer right.
UK Network providers are permitted to charge a fee for releasing the unlock code, this has prompted smaller businesses to offer cut price unlocking on the UK’s High Streets.

From past experience approaching 3 to unlock a handset is a right pain in the bum, 1st off the n80 was never sold by 3 as a pay and go phone so they will want proof of purchase from the original buyer who got the phone for a contract, if you cannot provide this they will not touch it.
Also that model is not currently unlockable via any independant phone shops, there is an unlock solution for bb5 nokias but the list of phones is very small at the moment, i think the n70 and 6630 are on it
