That's GBP63.00 or 92 Euro. This really annoys me.

Here in New Zealand the issue everyone is talking about is the power company Mercury Energy and how it cut of the power to a family of six, who were struggling to pay their power bill due to the mother having to give up work and use a respirator to breathe.

Despite seeing the family's predicament first hand the contractor cut the power supply, leaving with the machine's warning buzzer sounding. The 44 yr old woman died 2 1/2 hours later, as her children tried franticly to revive her. more

... There's a word for this...oh, yeah: capitalism! "free" market... In some latin american countries thanks to IMF, World Bank, and "privatiztion" the poorest couldn't even collect rainwater without being charged for it; most prison inmates in Britain are inside because of some kind of fee they cannot pay! When cuba or Russia do similar things, we apply the term "political prisoner"...

as we speak, there is an Iraqi killed for someone else's energy bill! connect the blo*dy dots! The desk-job-killers in nz have the same callous mindset as those in D.C., whitehall or ....

I'll join the dots for you.

Left-wing Labour Government in it's 3rd term.... State-Owned Enterprise.... Regional Power Company called 'Mercury Energy'.... Outside contracting company 'just doing what we're told'.

No vast right-wing conspiracy here. Just greed. And now Mercury Energy is working overtime trying to dodge the blame. They really have no idea at all.

They initially refused to reconnect the power when contacted by a Victim Support organisation. It took them 3 hrs to put 2 & 2 together and then overnight to arrange a contractor!

I heard about this on the radio here in the UK, shocking state of affairs! Apparently the company are saying they didn't know this woman was dependent on her oxygen pump, but the family told the engineer who came to cut off the power, who then did it anyway!

That engineer could possibly be tried on manslaughter charges I guess!

@carkitter you seem to think I'm a conspiracy-nut because I post in 911-thread well, I haven't believed in the pseudo-left-right-wing-"theory" for decades... it's all greed-driven - "left" or "right"! It's a conspiracy of power, elite, and cowardice...
@sammy_boy... we'll see about that law-suit??? check US-legislation of the last 10 yrs: it's getting harder and harder for consumers to sue corporations, healthcare-providers etc etc... in minnesota not long ago the patriot act was applied to someone suing his local council!!! Applying your rights is now often seen as a criminal act... I don't think NZ is/will remain an exception... Being poor has been a "crime" for some time - most western countries, e.g., will make voting just about impossible if you're homeless, so there isn't even a chance to vote for better conditions!

Someone high up in the company should be sentenced to life for murder.

I would expect to see the engineer charged with manslaughter at least and his superiors should be under the microscope for their conduct and training practices.
