is it possible to configure a pc to use the wap gateway to surf the internet, if you had a waponly gprs acount?

If you've got a WAP only GPRS account then you can only use it for WAP, even via a PC.
I've tried a few ways to get around it but I think the providers have blocks on the sort of content they allow through (or something like that... I don't really know!)

I haven't tried that, but you should be able to dial out from your PC using the phone as a modem.
The "phone number" should be set to *99***x# (where x is the CID of the WAP Data Account in your phone).
You can get the CID by Menu-Connect-Data Comm-Data Accounts then select the account and it shows you the CID number.
You'll need a WAP browser on your PC as well.
