Hi!
My friend has an old VAIO and every time he switches it on, and everything loads up. a folder called 'Common' loads too and displays on the screen.
It's path is c:/Program Files/Common and there are 5 files in the folder which I do not recognise, i.e not docs, jpg's etc etc....
I can also see the folder -
c:/Program Files/Common Files too.... but this folder does not automatically open when the notebook is switched on..
How do I stop this folder from automatically displaying ? Any suggestions, except for get a MAC appreciated !

Click on 'Start', then 'All Programs' and find the entry on the list called 'Startup'.
Hover your mouse over it and if another menu pops up, see if the common files folder appears there. If it does, right-click on it and select 'Delete'. This will not delete the folder itself, only stop it from appearing everytime you switch the computer on.
If it's not in the startup menu, you'll need to use a little program called 'hijack this' to get rid of it. Get back to me if you do because I reckon it'll be in the startup folder

@Cycovision!
thanks.. but that was the first place that I checked.. Only Microsoft Office in Startup !!
It does have a hidden subdirectory - bin, which has 4 .ax files !

Ok, download
hijack this, run it, click 'ok' to any warnings you may recieve and then click 'Do a system scan only'.
You'll see a list of registry enteries. Look near the top of the list for the ones that say 04 - HKLM\\..\\Run and see if you can find the offending folder. if you can, tick the checkbox next to it on the left then click the 'Fix Checked' button.
Hopefully it'll show up in there and hijack this will sort it. Again, it won't delete the folder, just remove the start-up command in the registry

Thanks again!
I tried that but the offending folder doesn't show up..
I can see many others, including c:\program files\common files
but not c:\program files\common
I have also looked at the properties of the folder and note it is read only.
Strange...

Well, there shouldn't be any folders by themselves in the start-up list at all, only program file types like .exe and .dll which, obviously, reside in folders. Come to think of it, there shouldn't normally be any files getting run on startup that reside in common files or common anyway!
It sounds like a program that does run at startup is opening the folder. I would use msconfig to take all of the startup items out and then switch them back on one by one to find the culprit. It's time consuming but it might be the only way. Again, it's perfectly safe because msconfig only disables start-up items, it doesn't delete them from the registry altogether allowing you to easily return the PC to it's current state
One more thing, if there's lots and lots of start-up items then there might be a malware problem. Have you run all the usual anti-adware / spyware apps such as adaware, spybot search and destroy etc. ?

why not try MSCONFIG see if it comes up in that, or is that the same as Hijack this cyco?

Cycovision!
thanks, I can boot now without the folder appearing...
I ran the System Configuration and choose the Utility tab. I could see 2 items that had c:\program Files\Com.... and unchecked both.
Then after rebooting, the folder did not appear. So I then checked one and then rebooted etc...and could find the offending line.
imjpmig c:\Program Filesz Com... SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run
I am not sure exactly what this line does!
My question is, does it matter that it is now 'unchecked' ?
The Notebook seems to run fine without it !
Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware etc are all working fine and are run every week!
