i just upgraded from a t28 and i'm trying to set up email on it-

i cannot email over wap, and orange told me i would need to get a new isp account, dial into it, and email from there.
i can not connect to my normal isp and orange recommended i get an account with freeserve, i'd rather use a different isp, is there a list of isps i could use anywhere? and would i be charged for calls to it or would they be taken off my free minutes?
also would i be able to browse from this connection or would i still have to use oranges wap number for this?

cheers
Al.

You do need a different setup to access the Internet/Email, you can't use the WAP one, but you can have more than one "Data Account" so you can use one for your Email and one for WAP... that works fine.

Dialing up to an ISP is kinda slow, but GPRS is expensive so you may be better off that way if you don't use it much. You can probably save yourself loads by working out how often you're going to use it, and switching to GPRS if your usage is high.

Assuming you're dialing up you will need and ISP (Orange don't provide that any more) and you will be charged for it by the minute. If you use HSCSD (any data connection over 14.4 according to Orange) you will get charged extra, but you can go up to 28.8 kbps.

It might be worth checking out the unmetered dial-up internet access services and checking what sort of number they use... you might be able to use data via an 0800 number and not get charged for it, but check with Orange because I wouldn't be surpirsed if they block that!

For a list of ISP do a search in Google/Ask Jeeves or check out the internet magazines, they probably list and compare loads.

If you want GPRS cheap, ask for the Orange Access Pack. It gives you GPRS subject to their fair usage policy (which is 10Mb!! ) for only £4

Bargin!

@georgied

The reason the Orange Access Pack is cheap is because it doesn't include internet access or sending and receiving E-mail. It's just for WAP browsing. If you want to send an E-mail via GPRS with only a subscription to the Access Pack and not a proper GPRS bundle, you'll be charged at the out of bundle rate of £10.00 per MB!

So if you want to send a 22KB mail via GPRS you'll be charged 22p, or a 35KB mail, 35p, on top of your £4.00 per month Access Pack charge.

Alternatively, you can subscribe to a GPRS bundle as well as an Access Pack and you will be charged according to the bundle.

See www.orange.co.uk for details.

cheers 4 that guys, i managed to get it working today with my isp's (Abel) 0845 number (which i will be charged for)
it is damn slow tho, what was that about connections over 14kb? i thought 9.6 was the fastest i could use, havent tried faster.

as for 0800 numbers, isp's use 0808 numbers for unmetered connections (which are subsidesed by BT surftime) and i doubt theyre accessible from orange
i know this because i dont have a BT line at home and had to create a blag to spoof my number as a BT one to connect from there

orange are sending me the info on their data charges anyway - i think its £3 for 0.5mb or something
that would probably be enough for mre just to senfd the odd pic out from my communicam every know anbd then

cheers

You can change the dial-up speed (Data Rate) between 9.6, 14.4, 19.2 and 28.8 But anything over 14.4 will cost you extra, and won't be included in any bundled minutes no matter what your tariff is or what number you call.

Data rate changes:
Menu - Connect - Data Comm - Data Accounts - [Pick you data account] - Edit - Data Rate

0.5Mb over GPRS doesn't last very long, but for occassional use might be the best deal for you. Dont forget to go back and check your bills in a couple of months time, that should give you an idea of what you're using and what it is costing you.

by "over 14.4kb" do you mean i can dial in at 14.4 for the same price
as 9.6kb and pay extra for 19kb and 28kb?
or is the extra charge for 14.4kb, 19, and 28.8kb connections?

Help! Hello, everyone - I'm new to Esato, but I was hoping someone could help me - I have an ericsson T39 on Orange, and I have (finally) managed to convince it to send emails, but now it only sends the first 93 characters, and gives up!

Does anyone know why this is?

Cheers!
