its an old tradition, they dont do it anymore! It started in the 10th century and ended in the early 20th century. I was in Ripley's believe it or not the other day looking at a pair of these shoes. They are mental! They are three to four inches long.
Its pretty terrible really, they started doing it when the child was between 4 to 7. They would break their toes except the big one and bind them tightly towards the heel often making deep cuts in the heel. They would do this continually every two days making the bindings tighter each time. So it pretty much cripples the poor kid for years and causes loads of other health problems
