Australia storm death toll rises

At least five people have been killed by heavy storms that are continuing to lash eastern Australia, officials say.
Gale-force winds and rising flood waters have forced the evacuation of hundreds of people in New South Wales.

More than 200,000 homes remain without electricity in the Hunter Valley and Central Coast regions, and in Sydney.

Jeez, I hope our Aussie members are alright. Things look a bit grim.

I landed in Sydney at 6am this morning but only after we made a missed approach first time due to the winds. I'm only home until Monday afternoon and I had visions of us being diverted to Melbourne or Brisbane! Fortunately we got down safely on the 2nd attempt

Then I had to get to the hire car in the torrential rain with no umbrella and carrying a suitcase! needless to say I was soaked within 10 steps!

the roads to my house were crazy too. many blocked by the police due to flooding or subsidence and all sorts of debris over the roads too.

I think we've seen the worst of it now though but the death toll is still rising unfortunately

Jeez I bet that approach was scary. I'm nervous in planes at the best of times so god only knows how bad that was.

Cyclones aren't common in Australia are they?

considering the strong winds the actual approach and landing was no where near the worst I have experienced and to be honest I was surprised to hear the announcement about the missed approach!

but once on the ground it was clear that the weather was all over the place!

we get quite a few tropical storms but not as far down as Sydney, and these winds were Southerlies, i.e. coming off the antartic and its unusally quite cold here (I'm wearing my 1 jumper!)

seems to be a bit calmer outside this morning though

I assume due to air currents and straights...

Yeah, that's right. I remember reading something about this on one of my flight simulation sites. Apparantly, it's to do with the strong winds blowing in from the West over the atlantic during certain, regular weather patterns.

For some reason, the airflow seems to get disturbed more than it does when similar air currents flow over similar land masses, causing regular mild to moderate high altitude clear air turbulance over the Irish sea, north west England and much of Ireland.

So I'm just glad that I'm not taking my flying lessons in Blackpool!
