Probably because you need a bigger ferrite aerial to get a good reception for am where as you can do with a bit of wire for fm.

indeed, and AM is mono and poor quality anyway. unless you want to carry around an AM loop with you all the time!!

I'm waiting for DAB to appear on phone handsets, as certainly in the UK at least they're planning to turn the FM transmitters off in a few years so we'll only have DAB (Not sure if AM will continue to broadcast though).

If the network providers sort themselves out and start investing money in improving data transfer systems, we could all be using Internet streaming radio instead...

I don`t want streaming radio,(cost to much and because it`s streaming it wont be in real time) or dab,(also not in real time) I only want am for the footie on radio 5 live.

It's near enough live if it's done properly! Satelite links have a substantial delay and plenty of people watch live football via satalite TV!
And the cost would (or at least could!) come down if a good enough infrastructure was in place.
Rant over, sorry for threadjacking

Virgin already do one. The Lobster 700TV has DAB radio builtin.

Because AM radios need a loop antenna, where FM only needs a telescopic antenna. Headphone cords can substitute as a telescope antenna, but for AM, there is not substitute because the bigger the loop, the stronger the reception.
That's why you get great AM reception in the car, but not in a mini stereo.
