According to economics times of india, nokia's market share dropped to 48% in 07 from 78% in 05. While sony ericsson and motorola have 18% and 21% respectively. India is one of the world's largest handset market of over 160mn subscribers after china and growing at 5mn/month. Mostly sony ericsson have benifited due to stiff demand of walkman brand and moto for l6 and l7. Mobile shop owners hav in more sony ericsson in hand stocks than any other brand.

Thats right, Nokia had a massive strangle hold in the Indian market for years but it has only been in the last couple of years that SE has actually focussed on the Indian market so this was bound to happen eventually.
What does surprise me is this has happened before SE has actually rolled out its ultra-cheap handsets into this market, something which will come of the Sagem deal it signed a few weeks ago.
I wonder if the signing up of the Bollywood actors to promote SE had anything to do with this.

but india's neighbour dnt hav even 10 of market what india has. And usually developing markets start with low end in no one want wants to compete with nokia. And in india uptil 05 maket was mainly driven by low end but now winds of mid end.

i still remember when 2 years back i asked to a shop owner for a K700. he just surprised at me and asked me to try 6600-more or less at same price. when i insisted him for SE only, he had to make a special order for me. at that time people meant a phone to be nokia and nokia to be a phone. even my friends were looking my set as if i hav some creature in my hand. now today the same shop is full with SE's new models!
