Sony Ericsson today announced setting up of a mobile research and development unit in India to strengthen its presence in the world's fastest growing wireless market.

The R&D centre would come up at Chennai, the company said.The company had earlier in January announced its plans of sourcing locally manufactured phones in Chennai with partners like Flextronics and Foxconn, with a production target of 10 million units by 2009.Sony Ericsson said the R&D centre in India is a part of its global strategy to reach the top three positions in the global handset market."Establishing a development facility in India along with manufacturing gives us a strong foothold for generating future growth in India," Sony Ericsson India general manager Sudhir Mathur said in the statement.The company's Chennai R&D facility would be headed by Anders Grynge, who was previously based at Sony Ericsson's R&D centre in Sweden.The new centre would become a part of Sony Ericsson's global network of R&D units in countries including China, Japan, Sweden, the Netherlands, the United States and the United Kingdom."India is the world's fastest growing economy with a highly skilled technology focused workforce. We can more closely tap into consumer behaviour in local markets if we continue to have R&D teams on the ground," Sony Ericsson India head production business group Anders Grynge said. source:rediff

Once they start the R&D & Manufacturing in India, some day you too will use the phones made in India.

Yes,cheap phones are the most common...but the trend is changing...
SE T610 was a big hit in Inida...
nokia 6600 has a big hit in India when it cost 250$.
Now,its Moto V3,L7,L6 and Nokia 6680,N70,N72 and N91 which are a big hit now.

People here buy their first phone cheap...but by the time,its the 2-3rd phone it would be a mid-high end.
