> memory and batteries on VAIO
Bookmark topic
Hi!
I have a Japanese OS TX51B (TX2 in the UK) and want to upgrade the memory.
I can see in the VAIO info for my VAIO that says the memory module is VGP-MM1GA and runs at 400mHz.
The replacement I see on the web shows the speed to be 667 mHz. I have been told differently about what I should do!
1. Buy and install the 667mHz module because your VAIO will just default to the lower speed,
2. you must buy the correct speed module, i.e 400mHz!
Now this may be a Cardinal Sin, but I was also told I can buy another companies module, and I will be in Japan in 3 weeks time. I know Buffalo do a module for 7800 Yen, so about 35 pounds. But of course, Sony say only use genuine Sony modules !
Sony's UK price is 200 pounds !! PC-World have a modeule for 69 pounds.
Is buying Sony memory really critical ? Buffalo seems repuatble in Japan.
My last thought is that I want to buy the long life battery VGP-BPL5 and I think I just switch batteries, then charge the new battery up, and that's it! But I was told that I will need to change something in the BIOS !
Any advice welcomed!

not sure about memory type as I have always found a match on the web with what the Sony specs say but...
I have upgraded all my vaios, laptops and desktops, and never with Sony memory. IMHO you're just paying for the name
I've also used long life batteries on my laptops and never had to change anything in bios, or even seen anything that could be changed
I'd be surprised if japanese models would be anything different

thanks for your super quick reply. masseur!
I thought so too about the battery. This Japanese OS VAIO was sold as a TX2 something or other in the UK. I wonder if Sony's claims of 12 hour usage is with the VAIO switched on but doing nothing!!! Bluetooth, WiFi etc all turned off! I wonder what a realistic time is !
I can't find a 400mHz match, but it seems that 667 is ok. Maybe...
I also guess I won't beat a 9800 Yen, ( 37 pounds price, ) price in the UK..
Last question, where did you check to see the new amount of memory ?
Just control panel > system and look there? If I press F2, the screen, in Japanese, is just beyond my ability with the language!
Thanks again!

I've never seen moer than about 5-6 hours on thelong life battery, but then I've never had the TX series (though I was very tempted by the latest TX5). The TX series are great battery peformers by all accounts.
As I recall on XP you can click start, then right click my computer and click properties and it tells you the ram in there. Thats rough from memory as I've been using Vista for quite a while now

Hi again!
You were spot on about how to check the memory. Gives the same screen as from Control Panel >System
I will get these when I am in Japan! Only 3 weeks to wait !!
Thanks again!

Just wondering if anyone could help me out. I'm looking to upgrade my Vaio VGN-FS115Z which I've had for 3 years now.
It currently has:
Pentium M 740 processor 1.73GHz
512MB Ram
100Gb hard drive
NVIDIA GeForce Go 6200
Would just a RAM upgrade be enough and how much should I expect to pay ?

Hi!
this
Sony page seems to say that that model can have it's memory upgraded to 1 Gig.
I think you can get 512 mb for about 30 - 35 pounds!
