Mate needs some assistance.

Wants to hook up 2 PCs using one internet connection, the isp is NTL and the current internet lead comes through the ntl digital box.

Question is what kind of router is required to share the connection?
and is it easy to set up!

Any help appreciated folks.

Cheers

I believe you would need one such as this
just make sure it is suitable for cable customers as oppose to BT customers

Any DSL router as opposed to an ADSL router.

If the guy in PC world hasn't got a clue, a quick way to tell is to look at all of the ports on the back. A DSL router has nothing but the standard ethernet ports whilst an ADSL router has standard ethernet ports plus a smaller, phone line style socket

It's usually easy to set up providing that both of the machines are running XP and do not have any viruses or spyware. In theory, it happens automatically but you often have to run the Internet connection setup wizard on one or both machines.

So its just plug in connect the leads and it should work fine?

Both machines have XP, and they are 2 laptops.

Do we not touch network settings in windows?

Thanks

Not normally if you're just sharing internet. If you want to share files also or if the internet connection wizard doesn't work, you can run the network connection wizard instead. it won't do any harm

You will get a setup disk with the router. Just run that on one of the laptops and follow the prompts. It's usually just a case of entering your username and password for NTL.

Just make sure that all firewalls, antivirus and PC security applications are completely disabled or, preferably, shut down altogether before you start
