God knows i hear you say.......
Whats the general view on whether we will see a P990i replacement with GPS soon, or is the P1 "THE" P990i replacement.

The P1 is not a P990 replacement since it lacks some functionality that the P990 has. It's more of a M600 upgrade.

Yes thats how i see it but from reading the threads people seem to be treating it like a P990 replacement, i think its highly unlikely that the P990 replacement will have a smaller screen & no GPS, however lots of phone retailers here in UK are not stocking P990 as soon as P1 comes on sale, which gives a false impression i think.

As P1i is marketed as P-series phone which will be the first P-series to be released after P990i we may call it successor to P990. SE also says P1 is fifth generation in the P-series though it is closer to M-series than P-series. But it doesn't mean that P1 is true successor of P990 as they have quite different concepts . I think SE is trying to market P1 as temporary successor of P990 until true successor is ready for launch.

No, its not a successor...I'd say its just a small upgrade of the defectiveness of the P990, with minor additions to the current M600, ie, camera, wireless, second camera for 3G...
I can't believe SE is even doing this! they are becoming too dirty in their marketing policy, which I say, is very unsatisfying to current owners of both phones

Guys, one decisive remark. P1 is based on the same symbian/uiq like p990. So, considering that p990 is year in the market and was announced almost 2 years ago, sonyericsson had to make a move. So, basically it's like an upgrade, collecting some good features from p and m series. Also, they were criticized for too small ram for multitasking, that's why p1 is having twice more ram than p990. They had to do something. Since p990 had it's fan's (like me :) ) but has been criticized too, they probably wanted to change the form factor to escape from bad associations. Also - they upgraded both p and m, saving some time and money. The p900/910 trick would not work, as i think.
So for sure, when talking about the real successor, it should have a new symbian inside and some more groundbreaking features, to be really new thing. That's for sure, look at communicator. So, wait for end of 2007, beginning 2008. New symbian and uiq has been released.
