> Considering a P990i; should I not?
Bookmark topic
I've been considering getting a P990i for a while now, as an upgrade to my Sony Clie UX40.
However, I'm really having a tough time. I really like what this phone has to offer and really like the design. The thing is that everywhere I go, I hear people screaming about how terrible this phone is. Especially with the recent official announcement of the end of further firmware upgrades, people seem to be extremely bitter. (I'll admit I was pretty frustrated myself when Sony terminated the Clie line a few years back)
Now on the other hand, there are always at least a few users where ever I go that are quite pleased with the P990i.
So needless to say, I'm quite confused... I don't know if I will love the phone or if I will hate it. It seems that this is how most people are.
Does anyone here actually like their P990i? Do you have any good comments about the device? I've read an endless amount of negative ones.
My planned use for the P990i would be:
- Connectivity and Communication (Phone, email, SMS, web browsing)
- Organizer
- MP3 player
- Camera
This is what is attracting me to the P990i:
- Visual appeal (I like the look of the device)
- QWERTY keyboard
- 2MP Camera
- Multimedia capability
- I've been using Sony PDAs for about 5 years now
- Cheap price (relatively)
The major reason why I'm only considering the P990i now is that it's price has dropped substantially in recent times, and at less than $400 it is now quite affordable for me.
Does anyone have any comments? If you don't think I should get a P990i, what is a device of similar capability and similar price? It seems that price is a major factor right now...

Haha, that's the thing; I've been reading so many posts of users being really disappointed with their device.
But then, every so often, I find a few people who say that it's mostly blown out of proportion. To some degree, I would imagine this, but it really is quite extensive. The more I read, the less I want the phone. But then, I come across a thread such as this one:
http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=149912&start=15
Here, a couple users write:
koto writes:
You should know bugs in P990 almost dont exists. It is fully stable and functional phone. No single P990 user is 100 percent happy with it only from the memory management side i.e. P990 has reduced multitasking capacity but only reduced not non existing.
Regarding bugs you can see that currently documented ones are spacebar bug, long email bug (very long), and some people reported problem with push email and sound volume in stereo bluetooth (some people).
So if your budget is limited I think you can freely go for P990, you would be more than positively surprised for the money you paid for it.

I think the P990 bug problems have been blown out of proportion. This is probably because what makes our problem really bad is because it's ours, so much so that it's enough for us to voice it out. To others it might mean nothing at all. Taking this into account, 10 small problems may be big ones to the 10 people who reported them, and might mean nothing to 1000 others. These 10 'big' problems posted all over forums would eventually make an impact and create certain impressions. I personally don't have any problems with R6 because all the bugs reported doesn't concern me. I'm just bothered by the space bar bug mainly because SE screwed up the most basic feature- making a call. The feature adds convenience but it doesn't mean there's no other way to make a call. I personally think with all the negative air surrounding the P990, you'll be utterly surprised at how wonderful the device really is
Needless to say, I'm spinning in circles here haha...

Yes, I wrote the comment above, and that's how I feel. But know this, the crappiest thing about the P990i is not the lack of multitasking (because that can be solved with manual reboots) but rather there are too many variables in the product. Everyone's reporting a different experience with their phones ranging from not being able to receive calls to being acceptable. Now I really think it's because of the hardware since everyone's getting the same fw. Personally, I'm happy with R6 because I've so far lasted four days without Swiss Manager Pro and the RAM seems to be stagnant at around 9.3mb for the past 2 days or so (meaning there's no more memory leakage from this point, but definitely not enough for high end users). This by no means mean I am carefree and do not support the cause of continuing P990 fw support, because I feel very sorry for those who can't enjoy the phone as I do and I'd like better multitasking no doubt, screw SE for their crappy (non-existent rather) support. If you ask me, buying your P990 is like a lucky draw, you might get a good one and you might not, so you might wanna get it though a credible retailer so that you can replace/refund your unit should the worst happen.

Well, i think people have obviously had problemss with the phone, but having said that, i have heard people calling it crap who havn't even owned one, so there is a tendancy for people to "jump on the banwagon", my personal honest opinion is, its a great piece of kit, i have been using mine for 8 months, i had p800 & a p900 before it & my P990 is as stable & reliable as they were, it has behaved perfectly, i never upgraded it, its running on what it came with from new, i see no need, i got it brand new for £200 ($400) & they are going for as little as £120 now, mine has restarted itself about twice in 8 months, always recieced calls, battery life has got better every week, i always use task manager to shut programs like TomTom ETC when i come out of them to maximise battery life & 3g is switched off as i have no need for it, few small complaints are silent mode is fiddly to switch to, speakerphone option is not simple to access when calling voicemail (although it IS in normal outgoing calls by using jog dial) for some strange reason this action is not available when i am calling voicemail, & i have to go through the volume menu, lastly sound quality when playing music or using radio through rear speaker is not brilliant, but it is fine through headset or other wired output system.
Anyway, i use my phone alot & its never let me down, i also use an double sim which has an onscreen menu that has a timed(adjustable) swopping from one number to the other throughout the day, so maybe this helps keep the phone clean, but i havnt always used that & i never ever had a problem with shutdowns as is often reported, anyway, i think P990 is superb for what i paid & even more superb for what they are fetching now.
Sorry about the long post but i cant bear to see P990's slagged when i & my friends who own them love this phone.
(I had to add this) i am in no way saying i don't believe some people have had really bad P990's, i just havnt actually seen a bad one, or know anyone who has owned a problem one, the previous poster gave extremely good advice when he said "get one from a place you can easily exchange it if it doesnt work", but remember, P990 when you first own one can give you the impression its lacking until you get your head arround where everything is for example the continuous video light isnt obvious to activate,........... anyway i say BUY ONE !

i'd say, don't buy one if ur after web browsing...it keeps exiting the browser if the webpage is loaded...not a problem with my old xda IIs. So id say, go with the p1. higher rom/ram, better performance. still, it's a nice phone bec of the qwerty and cam. OH. the cam can get really annoying sometimes too. It shuts down by itself or hangs...
