just looking for a new laptop at the moment, whilst in stores yesterday i found the usual, asus, hp, compaq, acer, toshiba etc etc. im not looking to spend more than $1300aud, and must have a dual core/core 2 duo processor, 1gb minimum ram, 100gb minimum hard drive, vista or xp not important, but most laptops these days come with vista, and needs to have a dedicated graphics chip, not a shared one.

saw some not bad laptops yesterday, but checked Dell's website when i got home and found this:
http://www1.ap.dell.com/conte[....]good?c=au&cs=audhs1&l=en&s=dhs

im looking at the 2nd and 4th laptop on that page. they are the same apart from ram (well the 2nd one comes with 2gb ram for a short time as its a special offer) and operating system, vista basic vs premium.... and they are fantastic prices. would save me a couple hundred dollars....

opinions please? good for its price? i think it might be perfect for me....

Toshiba, Sharp, Apple.
Those are the three I can recommend.

Toshiba 100% because of their amazing service and quality.

Yeah, they both seem ok for the price. They're not going to play the latest games brilliantly but they'll do everything else pretty damn well.

Personally I'd go for the fourth one because it has an AMD 64 X2 processor, but then I am a bit of an AMD fanboy

Dells are usually pretty sturdy and reliable, so seems a good choice to me

Just check out the Green Guide on Thursdays. There are normally some really good deals there.

I think I saw Core2Duo, 2GB RAM, 80GB-ish hard drive somewhere for around $1300-$1400.

You do realise you can run Windows on an Apple laptop don't you?

So even if you don't like OS X (how is that possible!?) you get the best of both worlds...

True, but if one only wants to run Windows then why pay more for what, compared to a similarly priced machine, will be a lower spec laptop?

Have you compared similarly spec'd laptops from Apple with others lately?

Its been proven many times that Apple laptops are not overpriced when compared with the same spec Windows laptop. It's on age-old myth that some people refuse to see is no longre the case.

In some cases Macs are cheaper by the time you've maxed out a Windows laptop to include all the stuff you get as standard with an Apple.

The only difference is with very low-end computers, as Apple's computers don't go down as low-end as the most low-end PCs.
