I bought the 30 GB Apple Video iPod. it has a very poor battery. I wonder how it became so popular.

If you are not getting anything near what Apple claims, then maybe there is something wrong with it, or the charger.
Playback time (30GB model)
Music playback time: Up to 14 hours when fully charged
Photo slideshow with music viewing time: Up to 4 hours when fully charged
Video playback time: Up to 3.5 hours when fully charged
From reports you can reasonably expect the 'actual in-use' battery life to be 80-100% of these quoted figures.
Also, if its brand new, like any new battery, it can take a few charging cycle to reach maximum life.
