We're stopping by London this week and asking the NY office to send us a couple iPhones to being back with us.

Anyone know what we might be charged for duty?

if they get caught then you'll be charged the standard VAT of 17.5% of the declared value + a customs fee of probably £15-£20 (ish)

If you declare them, or they're found, you'll be charged 17.5% VAT.

@all,

It doesn't really matter what you declare the value at as if customs do stop them they will reach their own valuation and it is not just 17.5% VAT but also duty on any goods over i think £28 is the allowance. Fortunately most of the time i have never had to pay duty except for once on a Sony UX40.

there is no duty on mobile phones, only VAT

here is a page from HMRC which gives good info on this and that page links to this page which gives info on the most common items people ask about. On that page you can see that duty is nil and only VAT is payable on mobile phones, at the standard 17.5% rate

Thanks for the input guys. So I assume I should declare the value most importantly for insurance puposes.

How is this usually paid anyone know? FedEx pays it at the airport and they charge us when it gets here? Does it delay shipping?

with Fedex they will charge you and normally before they will deliver.

Sometime I am able to pre-pay the tax when the shipment is in transit by calling up customer service and giving the consigment number while other times I have to wait until it actually lands in UK.

It shouldn't delay it much, if at all, if you keep ahead of the game in this way
