> W800I Start up screen locked ?

Hello i wonder if any one could assist me in my quest to regain the use of my wonderfull w800i phone. My problem started the other day when my bag and i got caught in an almighty down pour. This caused the contents of the bag to get damp including my phone. The usual occured the screen misted up and the slowly turned to condensation under the lens all the time the phone was working ok. Right up until i removed the battery to clean the handset. Once i tried to switch it back on the logo etc comes and goes and the phone stops on the screen where i have to select START PHONE or MUSIC ONLY the toggle button allows me to manuvere between the two but the SELECT button will not allow me to select it ?
Wether or not it means anything i have noticed a little icon at the top left of the screen it is a large RED X and below it is a RED and WHITE BAR. Which was not there before does anyone know what this is ?.
Ihave called sony ericsson only to be told that it seems to be a software problem and advised to download and then upload the new software to my phone. This i have tried but of course the handset will not allow me to go any further into the phone to do the upgrade ? PLEASE PLEASE HELP AS I REALLY DONT WANT TO HAVE TO DITCH THIS PHONE AS IT HAS SERVED ME VERY VERY WELL.
