Nokia will soon offer a software upgrade to its all-singing, all-dancing N95 that can dramatically speed up its GPS service.

Nokia hopes that the new capability will address the concerns of some N95 users about its slow GPS performance. Dealers said the phone frequently crashes and the GPS takes ages to lock on, as well as turning off when using a Bluetooth headset.

Satellite acquisition time – or the length of time a user must wait before the N95's GPS is useable – is to be cut down to 30 seconds, instead of as long as four or 15 minutes, depending on where the GPS capability was last used.

The download allows the handset to use 'assisted GPS', a system where the network gives the device an idea of its general location, so that it only needs to lock onto a single satellite instead of four to determine its location.

The download will be available from Nokia's mapping site smart2go.com

Hi all,

All of this is included in the soon to be realeased new firmware for the N95 as well. Personally i don't use the GPS or have any intention of using it so doubt i will even bother with the next update as for me i have no issues so until such time as other major improvements are made will quite happily stick with the current V11 firmware. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Dogman, I recently updated my t-mobile firmware to V11. I have not noticed 1 single thing different to V10. Not even the Pictures in Gallery come up any quicker. What exactly where the updates in V11?

GPS hasnt really caused me a problem, as i only use it from time to time. most of the time we do routes we know and do regulary!

i have noticed with the mp3 player going, and a couple of other apps minimized, then go to adobe reader and open the tube map, it sometimes crashes the mp3 player and you have to reopen it.

but havent had any probs with GPS anyway!

Hi scouser_75

I really don't know as soon as i got the N95 it was flashed to V11 the next day so i have no experience with V10 at all. I don't use or intend to use the GPS but everything else so far is fine for me and have no delays in opening the Gallery or anything else. I am using mine mainly in Landscape mode and have just discovered you can actually add a lot more shortcuts to the carousel in this view i now have 11 and have rearranged them so the ones i use most are above and below where it opens i haven't even added any bookmarks here yet which is yet another option just applications so far. I find the amount of customization on this device to be truly amazeing and just so easy to set things up for maximum performance and the way i want it.

Thanks for the reply Dogmann.

I'll go and try out all this customisation stuff tonight.

Out of curiosity, what additional apps do you have on your phone?

Also, do you have that common intollerable high pitch whine coming from your screen?
