I've been wondering this for quite some time now, why is it that we are advised by SE to disable USB charging if our notebooks are not plugged in to a power source? Is it just because it drains the notebook battery or is it more serious ie., it's detrimental to the phone itself? I'm wondering because it has happened to me a few times before by accident, so even though there's no visible sign of any effect, I would just like to get some peace of mind.

I think it's more a case of if the phone suddenly gets disconnected from the PC due to power failure (ie battery going flat) then it might damage the innards of the phone.
