I'm sure it is simple. But I just cannot find it...
Is it normal for the phone to "restart improve preformance" if I keep loading programs until it ran out of memory (down to about 2M before it restart)?
I'm new to Symbian. But I assume it should prompt a message saying something like "no enough memory" instead of restarting the whole thing.
So is it normal.
My phone version is...
Phone: CXC16237 R9EB001
Organizer: CXC162090 R4B01
CDA: CDA162007/6 R4B01
Is it the newest version?
Would utiliy like Swiss Manager helps... like unloading program automatically?
Thanks for your help and comment!

Hi, and welcome to the world of Symbian. You may not feel too welcome thanks to your choice of phone however. . Here is a few link discussing the P990i bugs:
http://my-symbian.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=27493
The P990 is well known for it's problems, especially with older versions of firmware. Do not despair however -Here are a few links to help you:
To check whether you have the latest firmware version, refer to
http://uiq3.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/CDA/P990i
As you can probably tell, the latest firmware release is R6D23. The good news is you can change your CDA to a World Generic 1 or 2, which usually get the first releases of new firmware. To change your CDA, refer to
http://uiq3.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/CDA/Change
or you could do it for FREE at home using Sony Ericsson Update Service (SEUS)
http://blog.artesea.co.uk/200[....]d-your-p990-m600-for-free.html
I tried the process above and it worked for me. BE WARNED - DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK.
After the updated firmware, the P990 becomes very stable. check out this article:
http://www.allaboutsymbian.co[....]ony_Ericsson_P990_Reloaded.php
Swiss Manager Pro will definitely help you with you memory problems.
Long and short of it is that while the P990 is a great phone, it has memory issues which will become better when you upgrade your firmware. SE has promised a final fw in August, so lets hope it will address the issues it has.

@Geezay, nice summary there! I started writing something similar but didn't actually finish it before you'd posted that.
Great for someone new to UIQ phones
Cheers

@sainty..how can you say it's good for entry level into uiq?the p910 was good but the p990 is a complete pile of shite.fair enough, the p910 was pretty slow at launching apps etc, but at least the thing could run multitask well.bejesus, even this old n70 that i currently have has twice as much usable ram than that diabolical so called flagship phone!

thanks all for such valuable input!
So what it should be like if there was no bug?
Symbian should close a program to free memory for the new program to load?
OR
Display a message like "not enough memory"

It displays "not enough memory" in the beginning (before the memory leak creeps up to a considerable level) if you have too many applications open simultaneously, but after a while and the memory gets really low (due to the leak) even without any applications open (perhaps after about a week), there's a good chance that it'll restart to improve performance to free the memory blocks and return to its original free RAM state (this is supposedly a 'smartphone' feature- detecting its own incapacity and restarting to regain that capacity). To prevent this from happening, just reboot your phone once in a couple of days, it would solve the problem entirely. Of course this behaviour is typical of the latest R6D23 organizer which is very stable as opposed to what you have which is, I presume, at least 2 updates behind.

@damo55
I'm sure Sainty means the linked ARTICLES/THREADS are good for people new to UIQ, not the phone (which is obviously rather complicated and not a good impression of SE for newbies)
