> 200 feared dead in airport crash
Bookmark topic
Up to 176 crew and passengers are believed to have died when a jet crashed and burst into flames after landing in driving rain at Brazil's busiest airport.
An official said at least another 15 people died on the ground after the Airbus-32 skidded across a busy avenue during Tuesday's evening rush hour and crashed into a gas station and a building owned by the airline, erupting into flames.
The flight was arriving at Sao Paulo from Porto Alegre in Brazil's extreme south.
"I was told that the temperature inside the plane was 1,000 degrees (1,830 Fahrenheit), so the chances of there being any survivors are practically nil," Sao Paulo state governor Jose Serra told reporters.
Emergency workers had recovered 25 charred bodies from what was left of the plane and 15 others who were on the ground either died at the scene or in hospitals, according to a Sao Paulo public safety media official. The official said 10 more people on the ground were injured.
The runway at Congonhas airport has been repeatedly criticised for being too short, and two planes slipped off it in rainy weather just a day earlier, although no one was injured in either incident.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva declared three days of national mourning for the victims of the crash. But presidential spokesman Marcelo Baumbach said that no cause would be immediately released because it was premature to do so.
"The president's worries now are with the victims and the relatives of the victims. That is the main concern," he said.
It was Brazil's second major air disaster in less than a year.
In September, a Gol Aerolinhas Inteligentes SA Boeing 737 and an executive jet collided over the Amazon rain forest. All 154 people on the passenger jet died. The executive jet landed safely.

I follow the accident reports of these crashes as aviation is a passion of mine, especially as a private pilot. So I'll be keeping an eye on this one.
One thing I can say is that no matter what length the runway is, aircraft handling books have endless performance graphs that pilots use and they are for each type of condition. They also have built in margins for extra safety factor. These allow the pilots to determine what runway length is required for every weather and runway condition and if insufficient runway, weather condition or whatever is present at the destination hte pilots should go to the alternate aerodrome. so at first thought perhaps this was miscalculated in some way?
I remember a Qantas aircraft went off the end of the runway in Bankok a few years ago due to wet runway too so it does happen but fortunately on that occassion the injuries were minor
none of this takes away from the sadness of such an accident and you have to wonder how unlucky you have to be when you are a casualty on the ground in a passing car or at the petrol station they hit

very sad news indeed..
esp as air craft are supposed to be the safest form of transport!
although, when it's your day, it's day!

It shows how cruel life can be sometimes...why a group of innocent people have to bear the brunt of carelessness shown by someone else is something that can never be explained.
May their souls Rest in Peace.
