Mobile phone company O2 is understood to be dumping its i-mode mobile internet service in Britain, owing to low take-up and a lack of attractive handsets.

The company, owned by Spain's Telefónica, launched i-mode less than two years ago with its largest advertising campaign since rebranding from BT Cellnet.
The £10m spent has brought in only 260,000 active users in Britain. While the service, developed by Japan's NTT DoCoMo, has done well in Ireland and will continue there, O2 had already held back from launching i-mode in its other main west European market, Germany.

Yup we will be getting rid of i mode. It was the worse service O2 could have ever brought to the UK. This service was bought on licsence from a Japanese network, where it is popular over there.

Hi fatreg and all,

I think the problem is that when i-mode was first launched it was competing with Wap and we all no how disappointing Wap was as opposed as to how it was advertised.

I think now that with have 3G networks up and running and HSDPA making such rapid improvements in speed as well as fixed price Data plans. The days of Wap and i-Mode being viable and cost effective are now long gone. Most of our devices are now just so much better equipped to give a full and realistic Web experience and are continuing to improve at a rapid rate, next year looks as though this will take yet another major upgrade in the experience we get.

Marc

a lot of limitations with i mode though, you can't get access to all sites, only limited imode sites.. reminds me a bit like 3's walled garden.
