Standing in the corner of the room; being exiled to the bottom of the garden; or teetering precariously on a chair.

People will go to extraordinary lengths to find that elusive one bar of signal that will allow them to make a mobile phone call.

But soon the days of despair that occur when you arrive home only to find your new handset does not get any coverage in your house may be over.

There is a new home technology on the block, known as femtocells, and if the hype is to be believed, it will end signal problems forever.

The paperback sized-boxes are essentially a compact, personal mobile phone base stations that plugs straight in to your internet connection.

Make a phone call on your mobile, and instead of routing the call through the network of base stations and masts that cover most of the country, it sends the call over the internet using your broadband connection.....

I think it's how the rural and suburburn areas are managed these days thats affected the birdlife, we have a field out the back of our house and the 10 feet around the edge is now left to grow wild with long grass and brambles. We now have a range of birds from sparrows, thrush's and tit's.

Try getting one of these things and putting it in a pet shop and see what happens. If there's roast budgie and hairless guinie pigs in the morning there may be a slight problem somewhere along the line, but I think the makers of this device would blame the new air con system 2 miles up the road.

I doubt somehow the Research and Development budget for this product, included scientific testing into its possible effects on sparrows.
Assuming you do have this device already, perhaps try switiching it off for a day or so, and see if they are all fly back.
-Have you considered the possibility that it maybe a cat that is to blame?!

I work a few metres from an estuary, a section of which forms part of a nature reserve. The area is teeming with birdlife of all descriptions, from terns, gulls and flamingo to sparrows, doves and the occasional pterodactyl. About 5km up the road is a cellular mast, aptly disguised as a lighthouse. The areas surrounding the mast are kept in immaculate condition, being well-planted with shrubs and trees. The local birds seem impervious to signals, in fact i've spotted quite a few nests in said trees... Possibly they're not aware that they shouldn't be there

(there aren't REALLY any pterodactyls left, btw...)
