> Which laptop/should i get a mac?
Bookmark topic
Ok well its time for me to start thinking about which laptop im going to get for uni in September.
I have narrowed it down to either a Sony vaio or a mac book/pro, now the thing is do i want to change to be a mac user and if so which mac do i go for, it Will either be the top spec mac book or the bottom spec mac book pro.
I really like the ides of getting a mac because every one i have spoken to is happy with them plus they are soo damn sexy but i still dunno, how easy are they to get along with? Iv been a pc user all my life (im 19 soon) will i have trouble adapting to a mac?

I would definitely get a mac! (got a macbook myself yesterday)
And i would go for the macbook pro as it has dedicated graphics rather than integrated

Well, the good thing about a Mac is you obviously get Mac OS X with it, but you can easily install Windows on it, if you ever need to use Windows for some reason.
On any other PC, you can only use Windows.
I'll let some of the many other Mac switchers on Esato tell you whether they think it was worth it.
As far as adapting goes, the one thing that all Windows users do on a Mac is overlook the obvious. Because they're used to a PC, they expect things to be more difficult, awkward, illogical etc.
When I help ex-PC users out, the most common reply is "Oh! It's that easy? I didn't think of trying that because its too obvious!"

100% agree with Jools, when i switched, think it was around 2 years ago now (i was 20 at the time) i sent him numerous pm's asking how to do this and that and it was so simple. It is very easy to adapt too, ask fatreg he used windows nearly all his life and changed and absolutely loves his iMac.
I have a macbook pro, the very first spec which is a little out of date now. I would go for a macbook, it is smaller screen, more portable and for the same money as a lower spec macbook pro you can get a 200gb HD and 2gb RAM for around £1,100 i think.
Hope you enjoy it whatever you get!

Thanks for the replys, if i was to get a mac i would definitely be using Mac OS X as i don't see the point in using anything else with a mac.
Now should i just get 1 now or wait till August/September? I mean will they change them at all in the 6 weeks? I spoke to apple and they said no because they have just increased the processor so they wont be doing that again for a while.

I'd wait until leopard is released personally, rather than paying to upgrade even though it isn't much. I remember getting a powerbook with panther and then tiger was released soon after. Because i only bought it a couple months before i got tiger for something like £17.

According to this page:
http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#Portable_Macs both the MacBook and MacBook Pro are at "buy now" stage. i.e. they were both updated fairly recently (May 15th and June 5th respectively).
It's more likely that the MacBooks will be updated next, to have the LED backlit screens like the MacBook Pros - but no-ones really knows if, or when that will happen.
If you're a student, you get student discount through the Apple Store (either online or in an actual shop) - just need proof of student status.
Also, check
HotUkDeals for some modest discount vouchers you can use at the online store.

Thanks a lot for all the help everyone

Leopard is currently scheduled to be released sometime in October. No-one knows exactly when though or if it will be delayed.
Again, according to that buyers guide page, the Mac Books are updated, on average, every 202 days, and the Mac Book Pros are updated, on average, every 186 days.
These figures are just based on previous update frequency and are no guarantee that the next update will be in that time frame.

I am in the same position - well kind of

- because I don't plan on buying one immediately but hopefully some time in the future.
I think I'd probably go for the Mac. I just want some sort of change you know. If I do, then I'd either go for the top-range Macbook or low-end Macbook Pro because I don't really want to spend a large amount of money on an OS I'm not familiar with. At the moment I am a bit turned off by Windows
However, if you are going to buy, then you might as well wait for the new Mac OS
