There are some Java-based solutions, best known of them are WayFinder and Nav4All. Use of Nav4All is free atm (except data-costs, of course).

Nav4All works fine though, a colleague even uses it on his N95, works better than the built-in one, according to him, at least cheaper

But he said Nav4All worked very well with the N95's built-in GPS device.
