Hey all, I'm selling my friends k810i on ebay and someone has asked me for the IMEI number. Should I give it? I don't know what it is so don't know if it is safe to give it out. Thanks.

Giving out the IMEI is risky, though the person who's asking for it might only want it, to check, whether the phone is blocked or stolen.
This is, what I hate about scammers : they scam a few persons, but make trading a lot more difficult for everybody, as both sellers and buyers get more suspicious

Yeah thanks guys I told him I wouldn't. He said something about having some software to check if the phone was fake or being sold for some insurance scam. Neither is true of course, and I wouldn't have thought either is very likely. But then, I don't really know much about these things.

There are a few websites though, where you can check the IMEI-number, to find out, whether the phone has been blocked, following theft or insurance scam.
In my country (the Netherlands), the police run such a website, they advise everone, who plans to buy an phone from a stranger, to check the IMEI before they buy it.

There are several ways to misuse an IMEI-number, all involving scams, an honest person can't do anything with it, except checking it on the sites I mentioned in my earlier post.
Problem is : you don't know, whether this person is ok, so you'd better not give him the IMEI, on the other hand, he doesn't know, whether you're honest, so he might be ok, just wanting to check your phone.

A genuine buyer can check to see if the phone is listed as stolen or lost and hence blocked by running the IMEI number on the ChekMend website, but If your IMEI number gets into the wrong hands who knows what could happen!!
Most of those who commit insurance fraud sell the phone first and wait a few weeks to block the IMEI anyhow so it doesn't really safe guard you any way!
