Hello dear geeks (like myself). I am purchasing a P1 within the next few days, was going to last week but decided IŽll investigate some more into all other options out there and this board has helped me alot. It will be a P1 without a doubt but what I`ve noticed is that many out there complain about it not having HDSPA. I now own a W880i and tbh I do think its slow to load pages, only wap pages go quite fast. Is this because the W880is software or do you P990i owners feel the same about the general GSM/3G net in europe? In Stockholm so far we only have a few "hot-spots" supporting HDSPA and my university isnt even in the area, will HDSPA be required in the future? I always turn 3G off on W880i since it uses so much more battery than GSM. Is the P1 a future-safe phone without the HDSPA, or will I experience the same slow internet-surfing as the W880i and miss out on future new functions from the phone-companies building out HDSPA? And another question which seems obvious, just have to ask, is it simple to just connect to WLAN and browse the net and emails from there and not through general 3G on phones having WLAN? Dont want to accidently get my phone bill up just to accidently browse the net with regular 3G and not WLAN
Thanks in advance.

I think you have really answered most of your own questions, the biggest been you dont have HSDPA on campus and you turn of 3G to conserve power.
So will you miss it I doubt it very much.

And if you are within a lot of WiFi hotspots with free WiFi and/or if you have WiFi at home you wont realy miss HSDPA

don't go around calling people geeks. it's an interest, kid. doesn't make people geeky. not like we collect stamps or anything

.
anyways there's a point i don't quite get. you turn off the 3G in your phone and complain about slower surfing on GPRS? as with the previous replies, i think your question's irrelevent in fact. it's obvious that you won't use GSM data services much, so HSDPA won't be much use to you. not when you don't want to pay for it...
and about turning off 3G to conserve battery? there's a topic in here somewhere about that, but in my own experience i don't think there's that much of a difference really. about like, 5%? negligible really, but that's another story.

Well, if you disable the 3G all the time, then you don't need the HSDPA> On the other hand, I used to use the GPRS connection for browsing and e-mail-ing and when the 3G connection appeared I said for sure I don't need it. But then I had to change the phone and the M600i came with 3G and, voila, I am using it cuz it's so much faster. Now, the GPRS was enough for me but 3G so a step further. Same with HSDPA. You have to analyze your needs. I have WLAN on my phone and I never use it cuz I have no hot-spots. So...it's up to your needs.

I have unlimited plan and use my 3G to the max, it's my main source of internet connection, I only use wifi at Starbucks where it's free. That's why I was bummed when I found out that P1 had no HSDPA. Apparently I suspect it is for the reason that HSDPA wouldn't be much faster than normal 3G with the outdated system it has, therefore it doesn't really matter if the P1 has HSDPA or not. But on the other hand, it matters to me personally and it would determine my next choice of phone because while 3G is currently fast, nothing is ever fast enough

yes, it does... at least, for me.
i have a 3G with HSDPA account with a local service provider and it would be better if i can use the P1i as HSDPA modem for my mac or surf the net with my P1i at a much faster speed.

HSDPA is quite fast! i used to have my atomlife and browsing with hsdpa service available is an experience. having said tht, 3G aint bad after all, i still have time waiting a 60mb files finished downloaded merely 20 - 30min or so, browsing is fairly satisfying
