> Lens Protector Anyone?
Bookmark topic
Is it just me, or is there a lack of anyone at all selling any type of lens protector for the Cell Phone Cameras. Are cell phone cameras still seen as gimmicks and therefore dont' need protection? Or has no once come up with a good solution? I just got a P1i and I'm hesitant to peel off the plastic sheet for fear that the lens might be scratched during normal handling. Anyone have a product, a home made solution or anything of the sort? I'd greatly appreciate all comments.
P.S. Lest any one be confuse I am NOT talking about screen protectors for LCD's. (-____-)

hi mate,
As far as I know there's no any lens protector in the market, well I haven't seen any. What you could do is to cut a circle from a screen protector so it fits to your cell phone's camera lens.
how that sounds?

Indeed, when you order the Martin Fields screenprotector for the P1i, you get a lensprotector with it. Same material as the screenprotector.
Good luck!

the MF pack is the one to go for, the fit is even better than the M600, dont notice it unless you stare at the corners!
cam lens one does the job nicely.

Hello,
Yeah I think I've read in other threads that the Martin Fields scratch guards come with a lens cover, the thing is my phone already came with a pretty good screen protector when I bought it so I don't know if I want to go out and buy another one just to get a lens protector. Maybe I'll call them to see if they're willing to ship me just the lens protector. Anyone else have any ideas? I'd be interested in other home remedies that people have thought of.

You definitely shouldn't be sticking on some cheap bit of plastic film over the lens unless you don't care about picture quality. The quality of the glass/plastic used for the lens is one of the key factors in the results produced by the camera and sticking a lens protector will only be detrimental to the results. I've said this elsewhere before but would you stick some plastic over the lens of your proper camera? If not, then why are you doing it with your phone camera? I have read else where that in the P1 the lens is actually made of glass in which case it will be difficult to scratch. Just take a little more care where you put the phone!

Dear Sir,
I'm sure you didn't mean that last sentence in a mean way, and I do understand your points, being a photo enthusiast myself. Be that as it may, there is a big difference in the handling of a camera vs a cell phone. And while I do not stick lens protectors on my cameras, one has to realize that a camera usually has a lens cap. Some even use a UV filter on the lens to protect it (though it's debateable whether the affect on picture quality is negligible).
A camera on a cell phone is totally different however. Most don't come with caps or a shutter like the p990 and worse yet, the lenses are usually located ont he back of a cellphone so when you put it down on a table it's pretty much on the table (with maybe 0.5~1mm of clearance in the case of the P1i). Even the act of putting your cell phone in it's carrying case could rub the lens the wrong way. Now i'm usually a pretty careful person so I don't go around throwing my cell phone on the table. But I'd still like some kind of protection on my lens, whether it be a lens protector, some kind of cap or whatever. The realization that a cell phone lens is probably much more likely to be scratched then a regular camera also gives creedance to this.
Course if as you say the P1i lens is actually glass then I might have less to worry about. Anyways, suggestions and comments on this are welcome!@

Of course I don't mean to insult anyone and apologies if I did! I just feel that putting a lens protector on the lens does as much harm to the picture quality as a few small surface scratches. Apart from the relatively poor quality of the plastic protector, there is also the unknown (to me) effects of the plastic absorbing various parts of the light spectrum causing distorted colours on the photo. Of course some sort of lens cap would be ideal and it would be interesting to know if anyone makes one of these. I cannot confirm this but the fact that SE have not included some form of cover on the P1 lens when they did on the P990 adds some credibility to the suggestion that the lens is made of glass. Or perhaps they are just cost-cutting!
Once again, I apologise if my choice of words offended you.

Where did you read that the lens cover is glass? I hope it is. The new K850i has a similar arrangement, a glass cover with no removable shield.
