Buy or download the actual song and then upload it to your handset as a proper mp3 ringtone. I don't know anyone who actually buys ringtones anymore, they usually put a song off one of their cds on the phone.

Yeah it's better to put the song or a part of it in your phone. You will have oportunity to select your desired bitrate, quality and etc...

P.S. I use Sony Sound Forge 8 for cutting ringtones (I use it to record sound for my songs too, but it is useful for all audio editing purposes) which has a lot of options to make the song suit your needs. Sad it is not a free software, but you can get 30 days demo.

You can cut songs down and use them as ringtones through itunes if you know how!

Yes, but with low bitrate (can't remember if 32 or 64), so quality sucks..
