I installed the software that comes with the P1i and it doesn't (what I can see anyway) have a 'contact manager' so I can edit and synchronise my contacts which look a complete mess when I copied them 'from SIM' to the phone.
I son't have my contacts on my PC, only on my phone.
Can anyone help?

As far as I know you need a supported Contact Manager (Outlook or Lotus Notes on Windows) on your PC to synchronize with.

what kind "mess contact" did you got?
have check how its sort? using first name or last name?
try more -> setting -> sort by

I updated the contacts on outlook express and during synchronisation, Its deleted some of them!!!!! and not put them on the phone!!!
Can I get them back?

Not unless you made backups first!!
the only other hope is that you still have copies on the sim, and can get them off!!
