Hi, really looking for some advice here....

I'm about to move into my uni house with 7 others, and am going to be getting the 20MB Broadband service from Virgin, which is cable.

I'm looking to have everything wireless... as we all have laptops.

I really need some help going about this, at home I have wireless set up but it's only 2MB. I need some advice on what sort of router to get to cope with 20MB, and with it being split up between 8 people.

I also want to maintain high download speeds (we are students)

And I'm looking to spend only about £150 on one.

Any help would be much appreciated as i'm not exactly an expert on these things.

I would look and something like the newer Net Gear N routers with i think they call mimo technology that give both increased range and speed but you will need either USB Dongles or cards for each of the Laptops for them to be able to take advantage of the speed increases and range offered. The good news is as you have gone with a Cable provider your distance from the exchange or how many other people in your area are using it will not effect the speed. Really when it comes to Broadband Cable really does offer the best speed and quality service and unless you are holding LAN parties or you have a huge number of flatmates i would think 20meg connection will be excellent there should be more than enough bandwidth there to keep you all happy. Some where like PC World would be a good place to start and i think your budget should be more than enough for a good Router and quite a few dongles or cards as prices of Routers seem to have reduced considerably recently.

Hehe, really believe you'll be getting 20mb m8? take that and half it...at least.

I was sold 8mb, not "upto" 8mb, but 8mb....guess what, i'm syncing at around 2.5-3.1mb....nothing compared.

To get 20mb, you'll need to live right and i mean right next door to the exchange, even if your only a mile away...expect no more then 10mb.

And don't listen to the Belkin guy

Yes they're only £40....and yes they're piles of shit which have crappy UI and break in a years time.

Pay extra, around £60-70 will get you a very nice Netgear which will handle 20mbps (even though i guarantee you won't be getting that), and like 200mbps network speeds....might even be more i've not looked in 6 months.
I know for around £90 you can get Netgear routers with like 1GB network speed.....might be ideal in your situation.

Taken from virgin media site:

Size: XL

(up to 20Mb)
Special offer:
£29.00 a month (for the first 12 months).

* No download limits
* Up to 20Mb
* Virgin Phone required
* 30 day money back guarantee

Btw, Virgin do Massive traffic shaping...on the 20MB package, if you download more then 3Gb between 4pm and 12am...they will cut your line speed by 50%....it's an automatic system process...they don;t do it personally and it's active on everyones account, a pile of shit people like to call *fair usage policy*

Known to people in suites as *Traffic Shaping*

Known to downloaders as *A sneaky way of actually limiting their broadband....without actually limiting it...the slow it down so much it's only almost unusable...thats why the can sell it as unlimited because although they put traffic shaping in place you can still...very very slowly browse the internet.

Something really needs to be done about that.

im on virgin media 20mb broadband! Its Cable broadband so it makes no difference where the exchange point is! Thats only with adsl! You get what you pay for! I always get 20mb speeds!

im more than happy with that

As for traffic shaping, i use xbox live and am constantly downloading stuff with utorrent and it makes no difference to me! Even if it does half my speed thats 10mb instead of 20mb which is still faster than nearly everyone else in the country!
