Hi all,

This is my first post so be gentle!

Just thought I would provide a few notes from my experience moving to the new P1i and hope these observations will assist others making a similar move...

After purchasing a succession of Sony Ericsson mobile phones through the years (P800, P900, P910, P990) I feel that SE have finally come up trumps with the P1i.

What have I noticed with the move from P990i to P1i? :

1. Larger memory resulting in improved UI speed - I can happily run all apps that I wish at once with no memory warnings.
2. Better keyboard (I was somewhat skeptical initially but to my delight, typing accuracy and speed has improved).
3. Better screen - I can actually see the screen in direct sunlight (very difficult on the P990i), I also noticed improved contrast and richer colours.
4. User interface - 15 customisable icons on the initial screen are very flexible and well implemented, a nicely placed back button on the built in Opera browser (at last!) - yes, there is a choice of the hardware back button also but see my improvement note below.
5. Better volume through mobile ear piece, built in speaker and bluetooth headset (HBH-DS970). A very LOUD alarm tone.
6. Better camera - now 3mp, slightly better than the P990i and fine for a mobile.
7. Smaller overall mobile size and no flip on/off dilemma.
8. Semi anti slip coating on the back cover, great for TomTom users who just place the mobile on a flat surface in the car (hands free of course!).
9. Improved memory card speed. The smaller M2 format certainly appears faster and speeds up the initial TomTom startup. M2 card prices (like most cards) have dropped significantly in price. M2 memory now available up to 4GB.
10. Better build quality, no creaks!
11. Battery lasts very well, the new BST-40 1120mAh in use here.
12. Faster Opera web browsing speeds.
13. A bit faster on startup time but this should not be required so often now.
14. Faster PC Suite backup performance (perhaps M2 memory assists here).
15. Feels solid and reliable - only 2 days use so far but no errors or optimise restarts. All main comms tested: GSM/GPRS, UMTS(3G), WiFi, Bluetooth, Infrared.

As ever, there are always things to improve but I believe this is the closest of all mobiles to meet my ever demanding needs.

Areas to improve (I think I am going to struggle here!) :

1. Hardware back button (under scroll wheel) very slightly too recessed (this key also acts as a key guard toggle with an extended press).
2. Screen back button now moved to right of the top title in menu navigation (e.g. Main Menu), a very small icon area to hit. There is plenty of space here, just make the touch point larger. There is a spare soft nav button on the bottom left but I can see why for consistency this was not used as this area is not always available across applications.
3. GSM signal meter seems slightly weaker than the P990i, perhaps one bar down but I did not have a problem with call connections even on a one bar signal. Perhaps the meter is just more sensitive or perhaps a result of the nice brushed metal front surround?
4. No camera lens cover.
5. Strange placement of message alert / power status LED at the bottom of the phone.
6. I had to de-install an earlier PC Suite before I could get the P1i included PC Suite to operate.

The P990i is still a very good mobile with the latest firmware, but the overall combination of improvements on the P1i make for a very satisfying and rewarding experience. Thank you Sony Ericsson, it was well worth the wait.

Good comparisons. I'd like to add some 'longer user' experience if i may? The build is better from start but all the holding to push, poke and type does take it's toll. It will eventually begin to break but in no way as bad as say my k800! Many ui bugs remain untouched, shame. And wifi scanning when there is no wifi signal to be found always appears to crash the unit. I was pleased but i'm already on my second unit due to dodgy keyboard issues so i have to remain cautious in my praise at this stage.

"10. Better build quality, no creaks! "

Just give it a few days....

Mine didn't creak at first but now it does. Not too badly yet...

I'll post my experiences here as I am about to do a P1 review; I have a P990i now and had P910i and M600i before.

What makes it worth selling my P990i and buying a P1i though?
I mean I do believe that they improved it over the p990i but are we going to be hammered below the belt once again only to have in a years time SE announce that there will be no further Firmware releases?

I really want to know because I spent $500 in April to get this p990i of mines only to see it rapidly lose value. That doesn't even include the 4Gb card, leather case, screen protector and hbh-ds970. I was really disappointed with the shoddy headset included but I was devastated with the price drop.
My P910i and p900 held their value for a substantially longer time than the P990i. Even now a good p910i can fetch close to $200.

As far as i can see so far the only thing worth getting the P1i for is the memory stability. Help me here.

P.S. When can we expect 8GB m2 cards and for how much?

Nikola,

You do not know how excited I was when I bought my P990i which I could now put a 4 or 8 Gb card in and beat most other phones at the time for storage. You do not know how much my lady complained when i first got it that I was behaving as though I love the phone more than her.

Now I want the P1i but how do I know that I won't be stuck with a device that isn't worth half its initial value. Not mention the accessories like a cheap headset.
