Here's the Scenario

file1 = CD Track 1 converted to MP3, 128kbps
file2 = CD Track 1 converted to WMA, 96kbps

Why file2 sounds crispier/richer than file1 when played in P990i?

I tried other songs and still wma sounds richer. Why?

Maybe the compression rate is better or the standard is better. I didn't know that. I'll try. BUT I guess the WMA is a lot bigger as a file!

^ the wma file would be smaller since its only 96kbps vs 128kbps for the mp3. Music compression doesn't determine file size, bitrate does.

Anyway back to the question. WMA works better with lower bitrates than mp3. Also mp3 algorithms are pretty crap in this day and age. Depending on the song encoded, it will give better or worse compression based on the frequency ratios in the song.

AAC is the best format for the phone though.

i always use 128 or 160 kb wma and have no problem with quality, i uise microsoft plus encoder

I wanted to use mp3 format because P990i music player can recognize ID3 tags. music player doesn't recognize wma's artist attribute. but as posted, mp3 sounds inferior over wma in P990i

AAC has the best quality:compression ratio. If you encode a audio file at 128kbps, aac(using the m4a extension, using h.264 encoding) will in most cases sound better than wma and mp3.
