This really bugs me, what is it? I notice it in text message input and various other screens.

it marks the center point for handwriting

write in line with it you get caps, write below you get lower case, above you get numbers

you can turn it off by disabling handwriting support in settings

Its the de-mark line if you are using handwritting recognition on the screen.

I presume you mean on the screen... it is for touch screen input... below the arrow...is letter input... inline with the arrow is capital letters... and above the arrow is numeric characters...

This has been so since the beginning of the P series... through the M series... and I presume the W series UIQ

I always have to write an upper-case B below the arrow, in order to get a lower-case b.

Really annoying.

Ah, thanks. I've now turned it off because I find the handwriting recognition function useless. It doesn't recognise anything I write!

It doesn't matter if you write upper or lower case letters. As long as you write them below the arrow, you'll get a lower case letter on the screen and if you write in line, you'll get a upper case letter.

Yes I know the mechanics of it but I am not used to writing with uppercase letters appearing in the middle of words. I can't get it to recognise the lower case b below the line.

The point of handwriting recognition is you get more proficient and it is supposed to get quicker with use but if you have to remember to use an uppercase B everytime you need a lowercase b then it sort of defeats the object.

Its hardly fluent!

Although it's often referred to as such, the "handwriting recognition" in UIQ isn't actually handwriting recognition at all - it isn't designed to recognise your handwriting and makes no attempt to do so. If you read the manual, you'll find "Jot" (the system used by the P1 and every other UIQ phone in the past) is actually a sort of shorthand with its own set of pre-defined characters and symbols which you are expected to learn and use - not the other way around.

I've made it sound quite cumbersome I suppose, but actually if you take a little time to learn and practice with Jot it's really an excellent system. I've been using it since the P800 (where it was the only decent way to input text, since there was no Qwerty and not even T9 on the number pad) and I still use it a fair bit on my current M600, even though the keyboard on that - and the P1 - is also great. Once you're practiced in Jot it's often quicker and easier than switching to the keyboard, especially when you're already using the stylus.

@Boiing

Yes I agree, which is why I said the more you use it the easier it gets. Right now I am quite quick on it and find it much quicker than the qwerty.
