I've been a subscriber to What Hi-Fi magazine for a long time now and I trust their reviews a hundred percent when it comes to hifi news. However and recently they reviewed 5 different makes of phones and the 2 SE (w950i and w880) phones came last whereas on T3 they're regarded as excellent. As a matter of fact T3 regards the w950i as the best sounding mobile phone- a challenger to the nano. So which to trust?

SE paid T3 to give them a more favourable review than they would normally receive.

i don't trust most reviews. i used to get What Hifi at one time when i was considering which separates system to get. i noticed that the Arcams kept on CONSISTANTLY getting 5 star reviews. i tried several different arcams in several different shops using my old familiar range of CDs to test out the various nuances of the sound.
i tested exposures, arcams, rotels, naim system 5, quads, and some others.
the conclusion: Arcams are a pile of poo. their sound quality was in the lower leagues, even though they were one of the more pricey solutions. the naim system 5 and even the cheaper rotel left the arcams standing in sound quality. no matter how you altered the controls, the underlying sound was really weak and poor quality.
i was left very disillusioned about reviews. and then i think about the phoney music awards and actor awards, both of which are intended to promote an album or film.

i had to find out why they were consistently given good reviews in What Hifi and some other mags, and why this didn't translate into the real world.
i later did some digging around various sources and found out that Arcam have a high advertising budget. hmmmm i wonder why that is. lots of backhanders here and there.

now you know why SEs get some good review, yet this doesn't seem to translate into real world experience. you wil find that SE have a high advertising budget too.

Btw,according to South Africa's version of T3,a w900i costs about 360 US$ while a w800i costs about 480 US$...

All tech magazines become biased.

I don't like the fact that T3 is such a Sony Whore.
But I still buy the magazine to look at the gadgets and read the specs.

They sometimes rate things low for stupid reasons!

e.g. no cloth or didn't come with a gun.

Hi all

Interesting topic as i always get both Stuff and T3 and to be honest of late i have noticed that anything Sony or SE seem to be releasing always get a great rating in T3 and like the previous posters am some what losing faith in the impartiality being shown by T3. I am considering just buying Stuff for a while as i just don't trust T3 any longer for truly objective opinions.

I think the problem is a lot of people that buy these mags rely too heavily on their opinions and don't actually bother checking out the devices for them selves. T3 raved about the Sony NW-A805 and said it was just brilliant on actually picking one up i just could not agree with them especially about the screen. I think they are useful as a basic guide but rarely buy anything just based on a review and actually like to touch and see how any device performs for myself prior to making a purchase.

Marc

I find stuff magazine here in the uk good. There mobile reviews (from what ive seen) all seem fairly unbiased. With the iphone been an exception. This seems the same in most mags and online. I just cant see what makes it so fantastic.

to be honest, I trust Stuffs reviews more than T3 but I like T3's design and layout.

I also don't like that guy who has a picture of him putting his hands in his jeans pockets. (If you know who I mean)

I feel like he thinks he's hot shit. I went to a Stuff Expo last year and he was making fun of the crowd.

They're your FANS you ***hole!

What Hifi does not get advertising from mobile phone makers so they can be impartial reviewing mobiles.
