As discussed elsewhere, Orange are seemingly beginning to drop SE high-end phones. I've received a good upgrade offer, so I'm reluctant to leave.

I was thinking of selling my upgrade and buying a sim-free P1, but I was wondering - what are the pros & cons of doing this? There's the branding/firmware issue of course, but what else?

One thing that occurred to me is the warranty/insurance situation. Orange Care is so hassle free - essentially whatever the problem with the phone, you simply call them and if it's something that can't be sorted out instantly they send a new one by courier the next day. How much worse is the experience with third-party insurance and a manufacturer's warranty?

What are the experiences of those who've gone down the route of using a sim-free phone in general? Are there any unforeseen pitfalls, or indeed any bonuses, to consider?

Yes there are benefits to using a sim free phone, the main benefit being the fact it will have unbranded firmware without you having to start debranding your phone yourself. This way you don't have to put up with the changes Orange make to the firmware (changing menus, disbabling features ect.)

Thanks. I did know about that though. I was really meaning to ask if there are any unforeseen issues that people have come across - particularly whether third-party insurance and warranty replacement is as smooth as it is on Orange.
