...without it crashing!
As users of this phone will know, more than 2 apps running at the same time, or using the naff browser (theres not much on this phone that ISNT naff), causes the phone to crash and reset nearly as much as a nokia.
Heres a neat trick to get web browsing up to speed-
First, make sure you have an internet access point defined, rather than a gprsWAP one. Some networks only put a wap one on by default.
Then download OperaMini from the Opera site. As the default browser is utter rubbish, its pointless trying to salvage anything from that one.
Then after installation, go to the midlet permissions and change as many as you can to 'ask once' instead of the default setting.
Also when youre 'asked once', choose the accept 'until session ends' setting.
Now for the pretty bit...
Turn all apps off and close the flip. Then go to the Shortcuts icon and place OperaMini in there, replacing a lesser used app if necessary. (I also placed Quadrapop in there).
You can now browse the internet with a browser thats relatively stable, and more importantly, with FLIP CLOSED, which means you dont need a magnifying glass to use the tippy tapper!
Try it- you get all the class of a SE combined with T9 web browsing on a touchscreen phone!

It also helps to have the latest firmware.
What is so "naff" about the built in browser? I get on just fine with it. It has never crashed my phone and it is the function that I use the most along with tomtom. The only thing I would like on it is to be able to use it in flip closed mode.

Well I'm posting this using my trusty p910i, which is the dogs bollox of all smartphones. Theres no comparison at all to the rank specs of the p990, of which I've had four replacements so far as my network agrees its a genuine 'factory fault' issue. This is after installing the latest firmware, and anyone defending the p990 must have a 'factory faulted' set of brain cells. The trick outlined above is a dedicated but rapidly running out of patience SE owner, trying to make the best out of a bad job.

If you hate the thing so much then get another phone. I am only defending the P990i as I have not had any problems with it at all. I know people have had problems, more than should have but I am just saying from my point of view.
And I would appreciate it if you did not insult me by saying there is something wrong with my brain.

Oh, dont worry- I now had enough 'same handset' faults to qualify for a different model replacement, which wont be anything using symbian UIQ3. Yes, this is primarily a SE forum, but that doesnt mean those posting here have to kiss ass and praise almighty mr sony. Compared to my previous phones, the p990 is a shed. And anyone reckoning the p990 is any better than shed level must have come here straight from using a motorola.

Agree with JCwhite, i surf the net via WiFi on my P990i quite frequently and it does a stirling job, and i've used EVERYTHING else upon which to make a valid comparison.

i also surf the web without problems...of course, updated firmware is a must...its not a matter of kissing ass, its a matter of saying what people experience...P990 weak point right now ITS NOT the browser, or instability, but the lack of RAM

Hi!
I don't have big problems with the built-in Opera but I have to admit that Opera Mini is better, faster AND cheaper to use when your out of your house. I had a little test the other night. I have always used the built in browser when I was on my own network. I opened a fairly big site with both the browsers and the mini won.....but I don't want to start a fight....

You forgot Mr Ericsson! There are two chefs, one making the sushi and the other rolling it in a Swedish pancake!
