okay all... heres the situation.
i work in retail as a cashier - in the store we need one opener, one mid and 2 closers. tomorrow im a closer, and out mid shift guy walked out on us. so tomorrow its opener and 2 closers. i am schedued to work 1pm to 930pm. im a manager in this place, i end over backwars for these people. i schedule them when they want, let them do breaks when they want, im very open and let them do what they want, i trust them. now tomorrow theres another manager, but im on of the closing cashiers, and something came up. its my gramdmas 70th birthday, and she wants a few of us to go visit my brother. okay, my brother is in jail, i havent seen him in 6 years. i didnt know it was my grandms birthday until my cousin called me tonight and told me what she wanted us to do with her (visit my brother). now, i work 1-930 like i said, but visitation at the jail stops at 6. i have asked everyone to switch with me, but noone will. they all said they are going out, or they have plans blah blah blah. now i hae bent over backwards for these people, switched with them when they wanted, i just do whater makes them happy, now this one thing that i really need, and noone will switch with me, and this is really pissing me off. what do i do? i have been there 10 months, and i dont want to just throw this job away, but this is very important to me. so what do i do? do i go anyway? do i tell my main boss whats going on, then tell him im going anyway and they can deal without me? do i suck it up and not go with my grandmother on her 70th birthday to see my brother who i havent seen in 6 years (and she hasnt seen in about 10 years). just give me a little advice...

and dont ask what my brother did, i really dont want to get into it right now. thanks.

If you've been a good employee, then you dont have nothing to worry about. Tell your boss about your situation and i'm sure he/she will understand. Happy bday to your grandma.

Can't you visit your brother another weekend ? Why does it have to be this particular weekend ? Your grandmother shouldn't want you to risk your job.
Talk to your boss, and when he doesn't want you to go, then don't go !
Of course it wasn't right of your employee, to walk out on you, but that doesn't mean, you should do the same, as a manager, you have to act more responsible, even when it's hard.

@ecs - I've been a Manager too during my previous endeavors . . . I remember one time when we have our supervisor-on-duty, and during his shift, his Mom was rushed to the hospital - stroke, I guess . . . but he just cannot DO anything, because he was attending to his job, can't leave the place etc . . . .

WORK is so important to all of us, without it, we don't have - $$$$$$ . . . also, top-brass (supervisors/managers) most of the time adjusts to the situation . . . I guess you just have to attend to your job and duing your OFF, go visit your grandma and tell her that you just cannot LEAVE your work, then go visit your BROTHER too ! If you have scheduled this important event waaaaay ahead of time in the office, then I think it's NOT your problem anymore . . . You can visit your BROTHER - alone, so the meet will be very meaningful for you both . . .

if i knew it was her birthday, i would have taken it off ahead of time, but i had no idea it was her birthday. but i cant visit my brother another time, my papers never went through, and my grandma arranged things so we could all see eachother. i should have known about this earlier, but noone let me know until last night.

Dont risk your job lol. Wel i think you are a good manager but you are too kind to your employees. At most they shouldnt do what they want hoping that they will talk to you and you wil understand. If your boss is not a party undestanding person then arrange for next time or that other weekend

@ecs - Don't WOORY matey . . . there's a SAYINg that HISTORY repeats - itself ! Your Grandma will still be celebrating her nth birthday next year - right Better make/file a year ADVANCE of a LEAVE of ABSENCE from work - this early, so you'll be with them - same time, next year !
