Orange threatens to spoil Nokia's online music entertainment party
By Nic Fildes
Published: 28 August 2007

Orange has threatened to spoil Nokia's high-profile launch of its new music download service this week after warning that it will refuse to offer its flagship music handset to its 16 million customers in the UK unless the Finnish mobile phone manufacturer agrees to work with the operator to ensure that customer experience is paramount.

Nokia is holding a press conference in London tomorrow to detail its plans to launch a rival to Apple's iTunes in the portable music space. Although it has not confirmed its plans, the mobile phone giant is expected to launch a series of devices, including the N81 that will spearhead its entry into the mobile music sector. The service is expected to go live in the UK in November.

Despite its dominance in the mobile phone sector where it commands a global market share of more than 30 per cent, Nokia remains reliant on mobile phone network operators such as Orange and Vodafone to provide connectivity to pipe music tracks on to a user's handset. However operators are steadily increasing revenue from music downloads - more than 100,000 single tracks are downloaded on Orange's UK network every month.

Orange has refused to agree to offer the new service unless it can trial Nokia's download service against the performance of its own product. Talks between Orange and Nokia have hit an impasse and in a strongly worded memo sent to Nokia executives that The Independent has seen, Orange has threatened to "derange" the handset unless the mobile phone maker agrees to a trial.

Hi GoldenFace

This has to be one of the funniest things i have read in ages as Orange claiming to want to insure

"to ensure that customer experience is paramount."

Which consdiering there awful customer service performance is just so funny what i think Orange means is they want to make sure they get a nice big cut as are scared of losing revenue from a revival service to their own Music download service as we all Know Orange are all about the money and nothing but the money they really don't care about their customers excellent customer experience just how much money they can get from them. Personally i hope Nokia tell Orange to stick their opinions where the sun doesn't shine.

We all know Orange are working with SE on exclusive deals with the Walkman range that will download Music from their own service so obviously there is a large conflict of interest and of course Orange don't want any competition to their own service as this will result in a drop in revenue. I am quite sure Nokia can survive quite nicely without Orange who are currently suffering one of the highest churn rates in the UK and are flooded with complaints on not just their mobile phones but even their home broadband service.

I can't remember where i read it but even Orange employees no longer use Orange phones even with their discounts and have been quoted as saying since France telecom took over it's all just about the money. If Orange were the only Network left i would make do without a mobile Orange should change their name to Lemon as they really do suck IMHO.

I should mention i actually don't like any Music download services as find buying a CD to be both of a better quality and cheaper plus you get many interactive extras with some Cd's that you miss out on when downloading Music and downloading Music direct to your phone is easily the worst possible Option IMHO.

Marc

What makes me laugh is that Orange Threatens to derail Nokia?

Hello Orange, If you didnt have Nokia then i think most of the customers would say bye bye to you.

Orange need to wake up pretty soon.

There are more and more people on hear complaining. to be honest Its now difficult to find a good word for them on the internet.

Only a few people in my phone book are now left on Orange. I know that 2 of them will be switching in the next 2 months due to poor customer service.

I know one of my friends was on holiday and did have international roaming enableded. However his sim card was deactivated by orange for 6 days. On the day he was coming home the sim card got reactivated. No appology nothing at all. Not good customer service.

I was in usa and my phone on orange had more problems. the sim card got stopped by the network for a hour or so. Or i got Sim card failed to activate to a network, or sim card activation failed.

The problems i have heard and hearing just get better and better.

Oh well. Im sure they will sort it out soon. but until then the customers come ang then go and dont go back!!

Customers are the biggest advert and orange currently doesnt have a good one.

This is what wikipedia says regarding orange

On the 21st of March 2007 Watchdog, a television series by the BBC focusing on consumer protection published the results from a Broadband survey they held

According to the survey Orange is the worst ISP in the UK

68% of Orange customers that took part in the survey said they were unsatisfied with Orange's Customer Service

Orange was voted as the most unreliable broadband provider

Orange had the highest number of dissatisfied customers and two thirds of Orange customers experienced problems cancelling their Orange broadband

Orange Mobile have been criticised during a Channel 4 News investigation for a lack of security which potentially exposed customer records to fraud

Any way If any one has any problems now with Orange then visit

http://www.orangeproblems.co.uk

Its good reading and orange Staff do use the forum like they do this one.

Its a shame the Management dont seem to take notice of the forums though?

@Dogmann

Well what made me laugh was:

"Orange traditionally works in conjunction with its handset partners to ensure that high-end devices in its "signature" range work well and that the customer experience is not overshadowed by unwieldy technological innovation.

In other words dumbing down handsets by crippling features and branding to death perfectly functional handset?

I'm afraid its going to have to come to some agreement as an exclusive blue N81 would be a big thing to miss from from current Orange range.

@MissUK

I think that is more than a little optimistic IMO if you look at how many devices SE sell and then how many Nokia sell. i very much doubt people that like to use Nokia would all buy SE just because Orange no longer stocked them. The same applies to SE users if Orange stopped stocking SE phones i very much doubt they would all switch to Nokia's. People tend to prefer one brand or the other as that's the UI they are used to and like. There are of course some that are happy to constantly change which manufacturers phone they use dependant on what attracts them at any point in time.

As far as i am concerned this is nothing more than Orange trying to make sure people buy their music by phone only from Oranges service. I really think any of these services are rubbish as they are both expensive and offer much lower quality. Even T-Mobiles on line service that actually gives you a PC download version as well as for your mobile is no better IMO.

I used to buy all my Music via Connect Sony's online Music store but recently have reverted to buying all my Music on Cd's as not only is it better quality and cheaper but a lot Cd's have interactive links which you just don't get with downloads .Downloaded Music really should be much cheaper than getting a CD and IMO is just a massive rip off.

@Dogmann

What I don't understand is this trying to restrict people to buying from their online store only. If they had any confidence in their own mobile download store then surely it would advertise itself and wouldn't have to be forced upon people.

*Adds to Orange bashing*

I got four free sims through the post after applying online for them (and four sent to my mums house (as ya do)), about a week later my step sister came round needing a sim to test her new unlocked samsung.

All 8 sims were useless and had to be thrown away.

Luckily we found some forgotten Tesco (o2) sims that were about 6 months old and they worked a treat.

Also Orange reception around my area is awful.

Did you register the orange sims? They need to be registered before they work.
