Hi all,

My PC has been running preety slow recently, and it is preety dire.

Do any of you have any tips of giving it that extra kick?

I heard about this thing called file drag, somthing about dragging all the files on your pc together which makes the computer faster. My dad did it on his computer, and his was painfully slow before, now its a rocket, if he can do it, any one can do it! Any ideas what this phenomona is about?

Very much appreciated

Anthony

ok heres the thing. when you place files on your pc, they are usually placed one after the other. think of it like a list of numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. when you remove a file, its like removing it from the list above, ie 1, 3, 4, etc. when you remove files, you make gaps in the perfect list. the next time that you add a file to your pc, the operating system tries to take up all the gap space plus other space. when this happens, files are fragmented, since part of the file might land in a gap, and another part might land somewhere else. when the harddisk then reads files, if a file is fragmented, the disk has to read from many places, moving its mechanical arm allot, which is extremely slow. therefore when you defragment your harddisk, all the parts of a file are moved beside each other, so the harddisk only moves once, and reads the file in one sweep.

best defragger is Perfect Disk. also, use Winaso Registry Optimizer, since junk in the windows registry causes all kinds of issues

Just select analyse, and defrag! Very simple indeed, but it can take VERY long so initialize the process and then go do something else for hours

EDIT: Try This

I have used this guide in the past and it was very good - even though my PC is going downhill these days

well, you install perfect disk, open it, and click on a drive you want to defrag, select entire drive, and wait till its done. with registry optimizer, you just install and run, then click on scan now. when its done, just click repair.

Ccleaner i a good app.
http://www.ccleaner.com/

there are several reasons why windows slows down:
a) most importantly, because it's crap
b) you have a trojan/virus/worm
c) the prefetech cache is full of previously installed and uninstalled leftovers
d) because the registry is full of gunk.
e) did i mention because windows is crap, inefficient, and badly coded?

I did the ccleaner. I must say it is going swiftly. But I had a probolem which I had before and forget to mention, and still happening.

If I watch a video, on somthing like youtube, it never starts up, keeps starting for a fewseconds then stops again, very irritating.

A month ago, it was fine. Whats wrong with the video?

Hey

I'm not sure about the video problem, but when using CCleaner, don't clean the prefetch.

Here's the link I gave you earlier - if you scroll down to number 9 - you'll know why
