Since many of you seem to be in the know, if not actually insiders, at the mobile phone companies, I'm wondering if anyone knows whether companies ever actually analyse and review the supposed benefits to them of the infuriating way in which they mutilate their phones, both internally and externally. For example do Orange have marketing data which demonstrates a net benefit to them of sticking stupid logos on their phones, mucking about with the firmware and and repackaging them? If so then why don't O2 go for it in such a big way?

I find it difficult to believe that it's only those who are more aware of the problems with firmware and the like that would prefer phones not to be mucked around with. I've sold old handsets where the buyer has used the orange logo and the fact that it's not an original box/manual to get a few quid off, so that would suggest to me that it's hardly beneficial.

If all things were equal (i.e O2 matched my retention deal, the O2 phone insurance/warranty replacement was equal to Orange Care) I would be off to O2 like a shot, purely in order to get a relatively clean subsidised handset. Even the fact that they stick the phone in a stupid Orange box gets on my t*ts.

i see where your coming from...its purely for advertising purposes but i would much rather go to a network which either dont...or hardly brand their phones at all....and to think how much money must be wasted with all those boxes, instruction manuals, and even PC suite CD sleeves that they have to throw away

I prefer a Debranded unlocked 02 phone any day to Orange branded and locked to the network.

I get insurance from my bank and ok they dont offer me next day replacement but at least i get a new phone.

I know people and my self when i was with orange the phones that are coming out of orange care are sometimes in poor condition.

Ive had plastics missing, parts damaged, phone damaged, phone not working etc.

Left orange to o2 and so far my bills are £10 less, i dont get any hassel and have less problems. To be honest my phone as its not branded has never failed!! Im prettu careful with my phone and know accidents do happen so i keep a old phone incase of emergency

Interesting you should say that. I once had a P910 replaced. When I got the phone the Sony Ericcsson bezel that they replace with an orange branded one (i.e the bit that says "quickshare" on the original phone, but "orange" on the rebranded one) was the wrong one! It actually said P900 instead of P910.

I had to argue like b*ggery to get them to replace it - they were extremely reluctant to do so, the cheeky beggars.

Its funny how some networks have very discreet branding but others smother their handset in branding. Does it really make a difference? Would O2 do a lot better if its phones had 02 branding all over the place?

i think o2 infact do better from sleling unbranded phones. for example many people on here prefer o2 because of this...i have switched to t-mobile form vodaphone and have actually kept the t-mob branding on my k810i as all there is is a startup and shutdown screen...and a we n walk icon whereas vodaphone seem to change all icons, screensavers, startup and shutdown screens, layouts of the phone and more

Phone networks aren't phone manufacturers......

Their phone firmware is tailored 'to give the customer the best network experience'......or in the real world, to give the network the maximum ARPU(profit) the device can, without compromise......

Hence why Orange and Vodafone both disabled N95's VOIP ability with their respective firmwares! And why T-Mobile disable flash menus/FOTA Update Service in most of SEs handsets for example.....
And of course, their modifications take up the handset's precious memory.....

Why do you think most of the device complaints on here are aimed at branded devices?? Compared to the manufacturer's money/time spent developing a generic firmware, the networks effort's at the same barely register.......

Repeat first line to fade......

how does t-mobile disabling flash menus and FOTA help them after all FOTA upgrades to the latest of their firmware...and lately they have started to make flash menu with their own icons in which backs up your point but i still dont see why networks disable FOTA :s

Because FOTA info can be changed if you know how, and you could debrand your phone for free....well, if the operator offers a data rate that allows Gigabytes of data downloads at next to/no cost, like Web 'n' Walk.....

But that was just a couple of examples, if you look at every phone ever branded, there are far more........
