I am so used to managing my sms through the nokia PC suite interface, I realise there isn't similar functionality with SE. Is there anyway to use my storage card as a default store for my sms as I do recieve a lot and would like to keep them? HELP!

Oxygen Phone Manager for Symbian OS phones supports Sony Ericsson P1i. You can read your SMS in our program and save them in various files (txt, СSV, Excel, RTF, etc.) with the Business license of our software.

FMA (Floating Mobile Agent) currently needs Piaccess link in order to work on P1i, and from what I read in their forum, it seems like Piaccess still needs quite a bit of work to do.

FMA works fine with all UIQ3 phones for what is asked in this thread - sms management
It wont work for more advanced stuff - sync PIM, file explorer, scripts, etc

If he doesn't mind using a 3rd party app for his messages, then yes, but I guess he was wondering if there is a way to select the ms from the 'internal' messaging app, as he would like to access them fm there. (like in S60).

But they get converted to html - they are no longer real messages. And there is no way to reimport them back into the messaging app.
